Apple’s so behind on AI it needs an intervention Macworld
The Macalope asks, do you want AI fast, or do you want it right?
The Washington Post, it seems, wants it fast.
“Apple is behind in AI and killed its self-driving car project. What’s next?”
Based on the implications here, we can safely assume it’s one or more of the following:
Filing for bankruptcy.
Waking up in a dumpster outside of Akron dressed in a Mr. Red costume, remembering nothing of the last four days.
Driving for Uber Eats, just until it can make rent again.
Getting locked in an Extended Stay America suite by its friends who are “only here to help”.
Walking into the ocean, never to be seen again.
The Post’s piece is a virtual confetti gun of Apple doom, ranging from the company’s quarterly results to some unit sales figures Tim Cook takes exception to. Meanwhile, The Verge’s David Pierce is slightly more positive on Apple’s chances of recovering from its devastating behindness in AI.
“Better Siri is coming: what Apple’s research says about its AI plans”
It would be easy to think that Apple is late to the game on AI.
And, apparently, get it published in The Washington Post.
But over the last few months, rumors and reports have suggested that Apple has, in fact, just been biding its time, waiting to make its move.
AI, as with all new technologies, is largely treated as nothing more than a foot race. One must deliver something, anything, to be considered in the race. Who cares how many answers it gets wrong, whether or not you took the source material without licensing it, what kind of junk you’ve wrapped it up in, whether or not you’re just a repurposed crypto company, or whether or not your answers go on to kill people with its flawed results. Shipping is all that matters.
Capitalism: not caring about anything since Adam Smith.
IDG
IDG
IDG
What is lost in the discussion is whether or not there’s a right way and a wrong way to ship AI. Others have complained that on-device AI, like math homework, is simply too hard. “Plus, if it’s on the device, how will we scrape all the data?! It’s like you’re not even thinking!” That part’s just a coincidence, of course. It’s really because it’s too hard. Doesn’t work. Not even worth trying.
Apple, as Pierce notes, thinks it can do it.
By taking advantage of the most inexpensive and available storage on your device, they found, the models can run faster and more efficiently.
The killer app here, of course, is making Siri better. But beyond just a Siri that’s more responsive and intelligent is the ability to privately synthesize your information for you. Apple greatly improved autocompletion by putting it on the device, so it would try to anticipate the words you might want next, not what some clown in Hoboken wants. (The Macalope’s not trying to deride Hoboken, it’s just that there’s an actual clown who lives there who was greatly skewing the autocompletion data. Thanks, Carl.) Imagine your device knowing you better based on your data… and then not sharing that with advertisers. Seems worth a little wait to the Macalope.
None of this is unusual. People said Apple was late to other janky technologies, too, like netPCs, netbooks, and, well, smart speakers. Smart speakers persist, of course, but the market potential wasn’t exactly one Apple needed to rush to get into.
It obviously remains to be seen if Apple can make on-device AI work. Maybe it can’t deliver. But it should at least get some credit for trying to implement AI in a way that’s better from the perspectives of privacy, licensing and targeted results.

Every new Apple product coming in 2024 Macworld
Over the past few years, Apple has overhauled its entire product range, including transitioning the Mac from Intel to its own processors, introducing the tough Apple Watch Ultra, adding a new Plus model to the iPhone lineup, and revealing a brand-new product category (the yet-to-launch Vision Pro).
In this article, we take a look at what we expect Apple to launch in 2024 and beyond. We have investigated every rumor and trend we could find to bring you our predictions. Read on to find out what could be in store.
Apple will be holding an event on May 7 named Let Loose. It is expected that the company will unveil two new iPad Air models and two new iPad Pro models. New iPad Keyboards and a new Apple Pencil are also expected.
What Apple released in 2023
Apple hit the ground running in 2023 with new Macs and a new HomePod in January. Then at WWDC in June the company launched no less than three new Macs and a brand new device – the Vision Pro – alongside revealing its plans for macOS 14 Sonoma, iOS 17 and watchOS 10. Finally (maybe) Apple launched the new iPhone 15 series and the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 at an event in September and then made macOS Sonoma and iOS 17 available for customers to download later that month. Then at an Apple event on October 30 the company unveiled new MacBook Pro and iMac models.
M2 Mac mini
Mac mini with M2 Pro
14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip
New full size HomePod (bit of a surprise this one!)
A larger 15-inch MacBook Air
A new Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra
A new Mac Studio, also with M2 Ultra and M2 Max.
iPhone 15, Plus, Pro and Pro Max
2023 Apple Watch Series 9 And Ultra 2
M3 iMac
M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro (14-inch and 16-inch)
And of course, the brand-new Vision Pro headset was unveiled (although it won’t arrive until 2024)
What new Apple products are coming in 2024?
So far in 2024 Apple has released the following new products:
Apple launched the Vision Pro headset in the U.S. on February 2.
The M3 MacBook Air launched on March 4.
Just looking at 2023 gives us clues as to what must be coming in 2024. In 2023 no iPads were updated, we still haven’t seen an M3 or M3 Pro Mac mini (despite the M3 becoming available) and only the AirPods Pro (and EarPods) got USB-C. It seems likely that in 2024 products will get similar updates. What else can we expect?
In the sections below we’ve split products into categories including Mac, iPad, iPhone and some new product categories. Read on to find out what to expect at Apple next event and throughout the year.

New Macs
With the update for the Mac Pro at WWDC in June 2023 Apple finished transitioning all its Macs from Intel processors to its own silicon. Apple launched the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips at the end of October 2023, so we can expect the following updates soon:
Mac mini with M3 and M3 Pro
Now that the iMac has an M3 chip, and the MacBook Pro an M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chip, it is surely only a matter of time before those same chips make their way into the Mac mini. There are rumors that the Mac mini may not be updated until the M4 chip arrives, but we think that would be a huge disappointment with the Mac mini being the only Mac desktop that would offer the M3 Pro chip. For this reason, failure to update the Pro version of the Mac mini leaves a gap in the lineup.
Read: New Mac mini rumors.
When? Mid to late 2024 we hope!
Mac Studio with M3 Max and M3 Ultra
The next on the list for update will be the Mac Studio, which is due a M3 upgrade too (in this case the M3 Max and M3 Ultra). We anticipate that this will happen at WWDC in June.
Read: M3 Mac Studio rumors.
When? June 2024
Mac Pro with M3 Max and M3 Ultra
If the Mac Studio is getting an update with the M3 Max and M3 Ultra you can rest assured that the Mac Pro will too.
When? June 2024
iMac Pro M3 Pro
There is a new iMac with M3 chip, but it’s still got a 24-inch screen. What people want is a return of a more professional iMac with a bigger screen.
Apple is said to be working on a Pro version of the iMac, a return of the 27-inch iMac Pro perhaps. It sounds like an M3 Pro iMac might happen, but we could be waiting a little longer for that one.

No iPads were updated in 2023 – the first time a year passed without an iPad update. There was one iPad that wasn’t even updated in 2022—the iPad mini—so that looks the most likely for an imminent update. But there may be an upgrade coming to the iPad Air too.
iPad mini
A new iPad mini (seventh generation) could be coming soon.
Read: iPad mini 7th gen rumors
When? Spring 2024 we hope, but later in 2024 more likely
iPad Air
The iPad Air could soon get an update to the M2 chip. There is also a rumor that we could see a larger iPad Air, perhaps 12.9 inches.

When? May 7, 2024
iPad Pro
New iPad Pro models are said to feature OLED displays for the first time, making them thinner and potentially improving battery life. The front camera is said to be moving to the long edge, so it’s on top when the iPad is in landscape orientation.
Alongside an M3 upgrade there could be a 14-inch iPad Pro coming from Apple, but we don’t expect to see this in May 2024.
When? May 7, 2024
11th gen iPad
The 10th generation iPad joined the lineup in October 2022 so a new model can be expected in 2024. The 9th gen model is likely to be retired, so perhaps Apple will continue to sell the 10th gen model, or lower the entry-level price for the 11th gen iPad when it launches.
When? Spring 2024 we hope, but later in 2024 more likely
New iPhones
The arrival of a new set of iPhones isn’t likely to happen before September 2024. There is a small chance we could see a new iPhone SE before then, but we think we won’t.

iPhone 16
The iPhone 16 is likely to arrive, like clockwork, in September 2024.
Read: iPhone 16 rumors
When? September 2024
iPhone SE
There have recently been a few rumors about the iPhone SE. A supposed leak revealed a bigger screen, notch and Face ID, for example.
This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a bigger version of the iPhone SE. The question is, will it still feature the Home button? Read about the iPhone SE Plus.
Read: iPhone SE rumors.
When? Spring 2025
New AirPods
The AirPods Max are desperately in need of an update. Will they get an update in 2024? Unfortunately, there aren’t any noisy rumors about them right now.
There are rumors about a new cheaper AirPods model, dubbed AirPods Lite by some. These are said to cost $99 and could arrive alongside 4th gen AirPods in the spring.
The wait for new AirPods Pro could stretch to 2025. They could offer new health-related features when they arrive.
Read: New AirPods rumors.
When? Summer or Fall 2024
New Apple Watch
We expect that Apple will launch an Apple Watch Series 10 and a third-generation Apple Watch Ultra in September 2024. Both will feature a new S10 chip.
A third-gen Apple Watch SE is also possible.
Read: New Apple Watch 2024
When? Fall 2024
New product categories
If Apple was never to innovate away from the products it makes right now it could be left behind as technology progresses. It’s no surprise therefore that the company is working on various new areas. We don’t expect these to land in 2023, but rumors suggest that some of them still could arrive sooner rather than later.
HomePod with screen
We do hope there is some truth in the rumors that Apple is working on a HomePod with a screen. We’ve always said that a screen would make the HomePod infinitely more usable, but perhaps we are the only ones who hate having to talk to our speaker and control the HomePod via an iPhone.
A screen would extend the uses of the HomePod beyond audio into visual – so you could watch podcasts and news reports and YouTube videos, but most usefully communicate via FaceTime.
So far all Apple has done is brought back the full-size HomePod that it removed from sale.
Read: HomePod with screen rumours.
When? Summer or Fall 2024

Vision Pro successor
The Vision Pro is pricy and a little cumbersome, but Apple is said to be at work on two updated models: a less-expensive version, and another high-end model. Perhaps “Vision Pro 2” and “Vision Air?”
Don’t expect them soon, though. Rumors vary, but none of them say that new Vision hardware is due until at least 2025, maybe even 2026.
We do hope to get news as to when Apple will release the current Vision Pro around the world soon. Read our When will the Vision Pro launch outside the US.

Apple's iPhone Spyware Problem Is Getting Worse An anonymous reader quotes a report from Wired: In April, Apple sent notifications to iPhone users in 92 countries, warning them they'd been targeted with spyware. "Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID," the notification reads. Users quickly took to social media sites including X, trying to work out what the notification meant. Many of those targeted were based inIndia, but others in Europe also reported receiving Apple's warning. Weeks later, little is still known about the latest iPhone attacks. Former smartphone giant Blackberry, now a security firm, has released research indicating they are linked to a Chinese spyware campaign dubbed "LightSpy," but Apple spokesperson Shane Bauer says this is inaccurate.
While Apple says the latest spyware notifications aren't linked to LightSpy, the spyware remains a growing threat, particularly to people who may be targeted in Southern Asia, according to Blackberry's researchers. Described as a "sophisticated iOS implant," LightSpy first emerged targeting Hong Kong protesters in 2020. However, the latest iteration is much more capable than the first. "It is a fully-featured modular surveillance toolset that primarily focuses on exfiltrating victims' private information, including hyper-specific location data and sound recording during voice over IP calls," the researchers wrote. April's warnings were not the first time Apple has issued notifications of this kind. The iPhone maker has sent out alerts to people in over 150 countries since 2021 as spyware continues to target high-profile figures across the globe.
Spyware can be weaponized by nation-state adversaries -- but this is relatively rare and expensive. Its deployment is typically highly targeted against a very specific group of people, including journalists, political dissidents, government workers, and businesses in certain sectors. "Such attacks are vastly more complex than regular cybercriminal activity and consumer malware, as mercenary spyware attackers apply exceptional resources to target a very small number of specific individuals and their devices," Apple wrote in an advisory in April. "Mercenary spyware attacks cost millions of dollars and often have a short shelf life, making them much harder to detect and prevent. The vast majority of users will never be targeted by such attacks." Plus, Apple says its Lockdown Mode feature can successfully protect against attacks. "As we have said before, we are not aware of anyone using Lockdown Mode being successfully attacked with mercenary spyware," Bauer says. Still, for those who are targeted and caught unaware, spyware is extremely dangerous. There are a number of ways to protect yourself against spyware and zero-click exploits in particular:
1. Regularly Update Devices: Keep your devices updated to the latest software to protect against known vulnerabilities.
2. Restart Devices Daily: Regularly restarting your device can help disrupt persistent spyware infections by forcing attackers to reinfect the device, potentially increasing their chances of detection.
3. Disable Vulnerable Features: Consider disabling features prone to exploits, such as iMessage and FaceTime, especially if you suspect you're a target for spyware.
4. Use Multifactor Authentication and Secure Sources: Employ multifactor authentication and only install apps from verified sources to prevent unauthorized access and downloads.
5. Monitor for Indicators: Be vigilant for signs of infection such as battery drain, unexpected shutdowns, and high data usage, though these may not always be present with more sophisticated spyware.
6. Seek Professional Help: If you suspect a spyware infection, consider professional assistance or helplines like Access Now's Digital Security Helpline for guidance on removal.
7. Utilize Advanced Security Features: Activate security features like Apple's Lockdown Mode, which limits device functionality to reduce vulnerabilities, thus safeguarding against infections.

iPhone 16 Models Rumored to Come in These Colors Apple will unveil its new iPhone 16 lineup in a range of new colors later this year in the fall. Here are all the rumored colors so far for the four models: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus
In the last few years, iPhone lineups have launched with five color options. This year, however, Apple could buck that trend for the 6.1-inch iPhone 16 and 6.7-inch iPhone 16 Plus. At least one of the standard models will come in more color options than ever before, claims one rumor.
According to the Weibo-based leaker "Fixed focus digital," Apple's upcoming larger 6.7-inch iPhone 16 Plus model will come in as many as seven colors that either build upon the existing five colors in the standard iPhone 15 lineup, or recast them in a new finish.
The following table shows the existing iPhone 15 Plus color options alongside the colors rumored for the iPhone 16 Plus:

iPhone 16 Plus (2024)

Pink

Yellow

The leaker in question did not provide any more context for the rumor beyond the model name, therefore it is not clear if they are claiming that the seven color options are exclusive to the iPhone 16 Plus.
On the other hand, the leaker may have only seen materials for the larger device in the supply chain, in which case the same colors could also be coming to the smaller 6.1-inch iPhone 16. Given that the two models are expected to be identical apart from their size difference, this possibility seems the most likely.
Note that this is the first rumor we have received about potential colors for the standard iPhone 16 models, and the leaker has an unproven track record for accurate leaks, so the alleged colors need corroboration from other sources before we can definitively say they are coming.
iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
Apple typically chooses four, cooler-toned colors for its iPhone Pro models. For last year's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, for example, Apple introduced a titanium chassis that came in four muted finishes: Natural Titanium, Blue Titanium, White Titanium, and Black Titanium.
According to one rumor out of China, the existing Blue Titanium color will be dropped from the iPhone 16 Pro lineup in favor of a new "rose" titanium color, while Black Titanium will allegedly be replaced with a "space black" color, which is said to be similar to the iPhone 14 Pro color of the same name.
Additionally, the same source claims that the Natural and White Titanium colors will be slightly different on the iPhone 16 Pro models. Natural Titanium is said to be returning, but with more of a gray tint to it. Meanwhile, White Titanium will appear more like a "silver white" color, which is also said to be similar to the silver version of the iPhone 14 Pro.
Last year, Apple surprised some iPhone fans by not offering a gold option. Gold was available through the iPhone 5S to the iPhone 8, and then on the iPhone XS to the iPhone 14 Pro. Given the popularity of gold, the rumored new "rose" color could well be the titanium version of a gold-like shade.
According to a rumor from another source, the iPhone 16 Pro models will be available in "Desert Titanium" and "Titanium Gray" color options. These names suggest there could be some overlap with the separately rumored rose color and the tweaked Natural Titanium.
In another twist, a recent rumor out of Korea claimed that Apple's upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models will use an improved process for finishing and coloring titanium. According to the source, the new process will make the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max look more polished than the iPhone 15 Pro models, which have a brushed finish.

The improved manufacturing process will allegedly result in a glossy appearance that is more akin to the heavily polished stainless steel material used in earlier Pro devices before the iPhone 15 series. However, the new titanium finish will be less prone to scratches compared to stainless steel.

Little has been shared about the device so far, but Apple has been researching ways to hide components under the display for years.According to a note from analyst Haitong International Securities Jeff Pu, Apple will increase the pro model's RAM to 12GB in 2025. Get ready for new iPads with this all-time low deal on AirPods Pro Macworld
If you’re planning to buy a new iPad after Tuesday’s Let Loose event, you’re also going to need some new gear to go with it: Today Amazon is selling the 2nd-gen AirPods Pro with a USB-C charging case for $180, a savings of $69, and one of the few times we’ve ever seen this model drop to this price.
The design hasn’t changed since the original model arrived in 2019 but the 2nd-gen model from 2022 has longer battery life (6 hours vs 4.5 hours), improved audio quality, Adaptive Transparency mode, and improved 2X noise cancellation. In 2023m it received a small refresh with a new case that has USB-C for charging instead of Lightning, as well as better dust resistance and lossless audio for Vision Pro.
In our 4.5-star review, we declared the 2nd-gen AirPods Pro as “the best choice for those who use Apple products,” but at the price, it’s great for everyone else too.

iPhone 17 Pro Rumors: 12GB RAM, Narrower Dynamic Island for Pro Max It's an iPhone 17 rumor frenzy this week courtesy of Jeff Pu, an analyst who has sources within Apple's supply chain in Asia.
While the iPhone 16 lineup is still months away from being announced, rumors about the two-generations-away iPhone lineup typically begin to surface about a year-and-a-half before launch. For example, almost exactly a year ago, we learned that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will have larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively.
12GB of RAM
In a research note with investment firm Haitong, Pu said the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will be equipped with 12GB of RAM. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro models have 8GB of RAM, and the iPhone 16 Pro models are also expected to have 8GB of RAM. The increase would contribute to improved performance for multitasking on the iPhone.
The alleged RAM amounts across the iPhone 17 lineup:
iPhone 17: 8GB
iPhone 17 Slim: 8GB
iPhone 17 Pro: 12GB
iPhone 17 Pro Max: 12GB
How that compares to the iPhone 15 lineup:
iPhone 15: 6GB
iPhone 15 Plus: 6GB
iPhone 15 Pro: 8GB
iPhone 15 Pro Max: 8GB
Narrower Dynamic Island on Pro Max
Pu said the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a "much narrowed Dynamic Island" as a result of the device adopting a smaller "metalens" for the Face ID system.
This would be the first size reduction for the Dynamic Island since its iPhone 14 Pro debut.Tags: Jeff Pu, iPhone 17This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Apple Reportedly Building M2 Ultra and M4-Powered AI Servers Apple has started building its own AI servers that use the M2 Ultra chip, Haitong analyst Jeff Pu reports.
Pu provided the analysis based on supply chain checks in a new note to investors seen by MacRumors. Foxconn is said to currently be assembling Apple AI servers that contain the M2 Ultra, with plans to assemble AI servers powered by the M4 chip in late 2025. Last month, a reputable source on Weibo said that Apple was working on processors for its own AI servers made with TSMC's 3nm process, targeting mass production by the second half of 2025, which may line up with this report about M4-powered AI servers.
Apple's decision to build its own AI server is reflective of the company's ongoing strategy to vertically integrate its supply chain. Apple will likely use its own chips to enhance the performance of its data centers and future AI tools that rely on the cloud.
While Apple is rumored to be prioritizing on-device processing for many of its upcoming AI tools, it is inevitable that some operations will have to occur in the cloud. By the time M4-based servers could be operational in data centers, Apple's new AI strategy should be well underway.
In line with broader industry expectations, Pu also expects Apple to announce on-device AI features at WWDC in June, such as audio recording summarization, photo and video editing, and live translation. While the iPhone 16 lineup will tout a range of AI features, 2025's iPhone 17 models will apparently be more focused AI devices.Tags: Foxconn, Artificial Intelligence, Jeff Pu, Apple SiliconThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Report: Apple's First Foldables Coming in 2025 and 2026 Apple's first foldable devices will reach mass production in 2025 and 2026, according to Haitong analyst Jeff Pu.
In a note to investors seen by MacRumors, Pu said that foldable devices are increasingly visible in Apple's supply chain with accelerating progress. The company is expected to release a large-screen foldable iPad or MacBook to kick-off its foray into the product category before launching a higher volume foldable iPhone.
One Apple foldable with a 20.3-inch display will apparently start production in late 2025, which is sooner than previously expected. This time frame is said to be supported by information from Korean display makers, as well as American and Taiwanese hinge manufacturers.
Apple's first foldable iPhone will allegedly feature a 7.9-inch or 8.3-inch display. The company may launch two foldables with these two display size options, or it may opt for a single display size option only. The foldable iPhone could form a new ultra-high end smartphone line for Apple. The device is currently scheduled to reach mass production late 2026, a year after the 20.3-inch foldable.Tags: Jeff Pu, Foldable iPhone, Foldable iPadThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

The iPhone 17 may debut a new ‘slim’ model Macworld
A new research note from Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities predicts some changes for the iPhone lineup of 2025. The contents of the note were first reported by 9to5Mac.
According to Pu, the larger non-Pro iPhone 17 will be referred to as a “slim” model, though we don’t know how much thinner it will be than the current iPhone 15 Plus and expected iPhone 16 Plus. According to Pu, the iPhone 17 lineup and its screen sizes will be as follows:
iPhone 17: 6.1-inch display
iPhone 17 Slim: 6.6-inch display
iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3-inch display
iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9-inch display
All but the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature aluminum designs that are said to be more complex, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the lone titanium phone in the lineup.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max will also be the only model to use “metalens” technology to dramatically reduce the size of the proximity sensor which will allow for a narrower dynamic island. A metalens is a microscopic flat structure with an array of microscopic waveguide pillars made of titanium dioxide. The waveguides focus light much like a traditional lens but at a tiny fraction of the size.
In addition, Pu claims that the iPhone 17 and 17 Slim will feature 8GB of RAM with either the A18 or A19 chip, while the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will jump up to the A19 Pro with 12GB of RAM. All models are expected to include a 24MP front-facing camera. Previous rumors have suggested that all iPhone 17 models will get always-on displays as well.
Pu has been accurate in some past predictions and less accurate in others, but it’s worth noting that the iPhone 17 lineup’s exact design and features are probably not written in stone yet even within Apple, so there’s plenty of time for things to change.

Did Apple just leak ‘Apple Pencil Pro’? Check out the leaked information about Apple Pencil Pro, the new stylus expected to be unveiled at Apple's Let Loose event.
(via Cult of Mac - Apple news, rumors, reviews and how-tos)
The time may be right for a Magic Keyboard Pro and Apple Pencil Pro Tomorrow at the ‘Let loose’ event, Apple is expected to debut next-generation iPad Pro and iPad Air models alongside some brand new iPad accessories.
The iPad Pro seems set to be the focal point, with a brand new OLED display, thinner body, and very possibly the launch of Apple’s M4 chip. New versions of the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil are also expected, both of which will likely be exclusive to the iPad Pro.
Evidence found on Apple’s Japanese site suggests the new Pencil may be dubbed the Apple Pencil Pro. Which got me thinking: adding the Pro name to the Magic Keyboard makes a lot of sense too, especially since only the new iPad Pro will support it.
Here’s why it may be just the right time for a Magic Keyboard Pro and Apple Pencil Pro.

Apple may add a Pro model to the Apple Pencil lineup Macworld
While Apple’s “Let Loose” event on Tuesday could be one of the shortest events in the company’s history at about 35 minutes, there will be plenty jammed into the short runtime. And if another report holds up, Apple may spend some of that time talking about a high-end Apple Pencil.
On Monday, Apple updated its websites worldwide with a new animation of the “Let Loose” logo, one where you can erase the image if you move a cursor over it on a Mac, or erase it with your finger on the iPhone and iPad. According to an X post by @ribu_ap712, the updated Apple website in Japan had code that referred to an “Apple Pencil Pro.”
このページをF12で見てみると”Apple Pencil Pro”って表示されてるってことは新型は3ではなく新しいラインナップとしてProを出すのかな pic.twitter.com/i5AlTcymGg— りぶ (@ribu_ap712) May 6, 2024
The existence of the code was confirmed by MacRumors, which also provided a translation of the code: “Folded green, yellow, orange and blue paper forms the Apple logo. Inside the logo, you can see the creator’s hand holding the Apple Pencil Pro and drawing.” However, the “Apple Pencil Pro” mention was not spotted on the Apple website in other regions, including the U.S., so it’s possible that the “Apple Pencil Pro” reference was a translation error. However, it’s also possible that Apple will make this squeeze feature available on a Pencil that’s designed specifically for the new iPad Pro, thus an Apple Pencil Pro.
A month ago, the iOS 17.5 beta was revealed to have code that referred to a new squeeze gesture the Apple Pencil. Since the three current Apple Pencils do not have pressure sensors to support such a gesture, it’s presumed that Apple will reveal a new Pencil during the “Let Loose” event. It’s not clear if this new Pencil will be in addition to the three current models or if it will replace one (or more) of them.
Apple is expected to announce updates to the iPad Pro and iPad Air at the event, and a new Apple Pencil (as well as a new Magic Keyboard) could be part of the reveal. Here’s how you can watch Apple’s Let Loose event on May 7.

'iPhone 17 Slim' Said to Feature 6.55-Inch Display Apple's iPhone 17 Plus or "iPhone 17 Slim" will feature a 6.55-inch display, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young.
In a post to subscribers on X (formerly Twitter), Young added to a report first shared yesterday by Haitong International Securities Jeff Pu. Pu claimed that the iPhone 17 Plus, rumored to launch in 2025, could be replaced by an "iPhone 17 Slim."
Pu said that the iPhone 17 Slim will feature a 6.6-inch display, which is a slight reduction on the iPhone 14, 15, and 16 Plus, which feature a 6.69-inch OLED display. Now, Young has clarified that the device will feature a 6.55-inch display. This is a reduction of two percent over the previous, current, and next-generation models.
A smaller display would help differentiate the larger iPhone 17 model from the iPhone 17 Pro Max, while remaining larger than the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, which are expected to feature 6.1- and 6.3-inch displays, respectively.Tags: Ross Young, iPhone 17This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

'iPhone 17 Slim' With Smaller Display Rumored to Launch Next Year While the iPhone 16 series is still months away from launching, an early rumor about an all-new iPhone 17 model has now surfaced.
In a research note with investment firm Haitong this week, analyst Jeff Pu said Apple is planning a so-called "iPhone 17 Slim" model that would replace the Plus model in the lineup. Pu said this model will feature around a 6.6-inch display, a slimmer design, an A18 or A19 chip, 8GB of RAM, a 24-megapixel front camera, and a 48-megapixel telephoto camera.
Pu expects the iPhone 17 Slim to have an aluminum chassis, rather than titanium like the Pro models. He expects the device to have some external design changes, but he did not share any specific details.

Apple’s Let Loose event will reportedly be one of the shortest ever Macworld
When Apple announced its Let Loose event two weeks ago, it caught us off-guard. With MacBook Airs in the rear-view mirror and WWDC just a month away, there didn’t seem to be enough products to fill an hour-long keynote.
It turns out the rumors were right. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, writing in his weekly Power On newsletter, the Let Loose event “is expected to be about 35 minutes,” significantly shorter than other recent spring events:
Peek Performance, March 8, 2022: 59 minutes
Spring Loaded, April 20, 2021: 61 minutes
Show time, March 25, 2019: 109 minutes
Field trip, March 27, 2018: 67 minutes
Apple has billed Let Loose as “a different kind of Apple event,” so it’s possible Apple still has something exciting up its sleeve. It could also be a sign that Apple is moving toward shorter-focused events. Its last event, Scary Fast in October, was also about a half-hour and was dedicated to the MacBook Pro and M3 processor.
Apple is expected to unveil significant updates to the iPad Pro and iPad Air at the event, as well as a new Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard. To help promote the event, which takes place at 7 a.m. PT on May 7, Apple added an interactive teaser to its home page that lets users erase the animated Apple logos before another is redrawn.
Here’s how you can watch Apple’s Let Loose event on May 7.

iOS 17.5 shows Apple following the New York Times playbook with games Last week at the White House Correspondents Dinner, SNL’s Colin Jost joked about how The New York Times—the country’s most successful news publication—was only kept alive by Wordle and other puzzle games. The Times didn’t appreciate the remark.
Apple has clearly been paying attention to the Times’ success, though, as its latest strategy for boosting Apple News+ subscribers is a heaping dose of puzzle games. After launching crosswords last fall, another News+ game is on its way with iOS 17.5’s impending release: Quartiles.
Also noteworthy: both crosswords and Quartiles will be equipped with Game Center support in iOS 17.5. So much of Wordle’s initial popularity was tied to social sharing, and now in its own way, Apple is making it possible to play News+ games alongside your friends and in competition with others.
Will Apple’s games-focused strategy for News+ be successful? Here’s why it might.

Apple unveils new Pride Solo Loop band ahead of iPad event Macworld
Apple on Monday revealed the 2024 Pride Collection, a set of accessory items to promote “the vibrancy and diversity of LGBTQ+ communities.” The main item of the collection is the Apple Watch Pride Edition Braided Solo Loop, a watch band accompanied by a matching watch face and dynamic iPhone and iPad wallpapers.
The multi-colored band features black and brown to represent Black, Hispanic, and Latin communities and those impacted by HIV/AIDS, and pink, light blue, and white for transgender and nonbinary individuals. The band, “evokes the strength and beauty of LGBTQ+ communities with a vibrant, fluorescent design inspired by multiple pride flags.” It also has a lug that’s laser-etched with “PRIDE 2024.” Other than the date, it’s not clear how this band is different from the previous braided loop Pride band released in 2021.
The Apple Watch Pride Edition Braided Solo Loop goes on sale on May 22 in the U.S. and Canada for US$99 (the Canadian price was not available). It will be available in other regions on May 23. It is compatible with the Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 4 or later.
The watch face and wallpapers feature glowing, multi-colored letters and numbers that “represent the everlasting impact of LGBTQ+ activism and its role in illuminating the path to greater equality for future generations.” The watch face can be obtained through the Watch app or the Apple Store app on the iPhone or through Apple’s website. The wallpapers will be available with watchOS 10.5, iOS 17.5, and iPadOS 17.5, which are currently in beta and expected to be released within the next week following the May 7 “Let Loose” event.
The Pride collection is one way Apple shows support of LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations such as ILGA World, the Human Rights Campaign, Encircle, Equality North Carolina, Equality Texas, GLSEN, Equality Federation, the National Center for Transgender Equality, PFLAG, SMYAL, and The Trevor Project.
Past editions of the Pride watch band are still available at Apple’s online store. Read our Best Apple Watch guide for the latest recommendations, tips, and deals.

Erasable Logo on Apple's Homepage Hints at New Apple Pencil Coming Tomorrow Apple today updated Apple.com with a teaser for tomorrow's event, adding an interactive erasing feature that seems to hint at a refreshed version of the Apple Pencil.
Hovering over the Apple logo and moving the mouse allows the current artwork to be erased and replaced with a new logo design. Apple created a total of six logos for the May 7 "Let Loose" event, and the interactive eraser cycles through those options.
The event is expected to focus on new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, but rumors suggest the iPads will also be accompanied by an overhauled Apple Pencil and a refreshed version of the Magic Keyboard.
Code in iOS 17.5 mentions an Apple Pencil with a "squeeze" gesture, so it is possible that the new model that's coming will have a hardware-based erase option enabled with a squeeze. The current Apple Pencil models do not have a universal erase feature that works across apps, and adding such an option would likely be popular with users.Tag: May 2024 Apple EventThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Says iOS 17.5 Coming 'Soon' With These New Features for iPhones Apple today announced that iOS 17.5 will be released to the public "soon," following over a month of beta testing. While the software update is relatively minor, it does have a few new features and changes, as outlined in the list below.
"The new Pride Radiance watch face and iPhone and iPad wallpapers will be available soon with watchOS 10.5, iOS 17.5, and iPadOS 17.5," said Apple, in its press release introducing a new Pride Edition band for the Apple Watch.
Below, we have recapped everything new in the iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 betas so far.
Web Distribution
Starting with the second beta of iOS 17.5, eligible developers are able to distribute their iOS apps to iPhone users located in the EU directly on the web, instead of through the App Store or an alternative app marketplace.
"Web Distribution" is limited to larger developers based in the EU. To qualify for this distribution method, Apple says the developer must be a member of the Apple Developer Program for two continuous years or more, and have an app that had more than one million annual installs on iOS in the EU in the prior calendar year.
"Web Distribution" builds upon the alternative app marketplaces that Apple already allows on the iPhone in the EU starting with iOS 17.4. Apple has made these app-related changes to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act.
Quartiles
iOS 17.5 includes a fun addition for Apple News+ subscribers: a daily word game called Quartiles.
Quartiles tasks you with combining tiles to form words and earn points. Each puzzle starts with a grid of 20 tiles, and words can be formed with one to four tiles. A quartile is a four-tile word, and if you find all five in each puzzle, you earn a 40-point bonus. The website Gadget Hacks shared a walkthrough of the game with more details.
Quartiles is the third puzzle game included with an Apple News+ subscription, alongside Crossword and Crossword Mini. Starting with the iOS 17.5 beta, all three games integrate with Game Center to display leaderboards.
On an iPhone updated to the iOS 17.5 beta, Quartiles can be found in the Apple News app under the Following tab → Puzzles. The game is also available on the iPad and Mac starting with the iPadOS 17.5 and macOS 14.5 betas.
Apple News+ is available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, and the U.K., but the puzzle games seem to be limited to the U.S. and Canada for now.
Repair Mode
iOS 17.5 introduces a "Repair State" option that lets an iPhone be sent in for service without deactivating Find My and Activation Lock.
Color-Changing Apple Podcasts Widget
While listening to a podcast on the iOS 17.5 beta, the background color of the Apple Podcasts widget changes to match the podcast's cover art. This feature was first added in the iOS 17.4 beta, but it was removed before that update was released.
Color-changing Apple Podcasts widget is back in iOS 17.5! pic.twitter.com/2PonD5FMi6— Stephen Robles (@stephenrobles) April 2, 2024
Mobile Device Management
As noted by Aaron Perris, MDM solutions can enforce an iOS beta version during Automated Device Enrollment starting with the iOS 17.5 beta.
Code Changes
Battery Health Menu for Future iPads
The first iPadOS 17.5 beta added several new references to a Battery Health menu on the iPad, but the feature is not actually visible yet. The menu is expected to show an iPad battery's maximum remaining capacity and charge cycle count.
A sample of the code strings added in the iPadOS 17.5 beta:
"iPad must be regularly used while not connected to power to show maximum capacity."
"This is the number of times iPad has used your battery's capacity."
"The iPad battery is performing as expected."
"iPad batteries, like all rechargeable batteries, have a limited lifespan and may eventually need to be serviced or replaced."
"The original battery was designed to retain X capacity at X cycles under ideal conditions. Actual battery performance depends on a number of variables, including how iPad is used and charged regularly. The one-year warranty includes service for defective batteries in addition to rights provided under local consumer laws."
There is no visible Battery Health menu on any existing iPad models running the iPadOS 17.5 beta, leading us to believe that the menu may be limited to the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models that are expected to launch this month, and likely other new iPads released in the future. Apple has shown battery capacity information on iPhones for many years, but cycle count information is currently limited to the latest iPhone 15 series.
New Apple Pencil
In the iPadOS 17.5 beta, there are potential references to a new fourth-generation Apple Pencil, amid rumors that the accessory will be updated soon.
The beta includes a hidden code reference to a "V4" version of the Apple Pencil:NumberOfApplePencilV1ConnectionsCount
NumberOfApplePencilV2ConnectionsCount
NumberOfApplePencilV3ConnectionsCount
NumberOfApplePencilV4ConnectionsCountA new Apple Pencil is rumored to launch alongside updated iPad Pro and iPad Air models this month. Apple refers to the USB-C version of the Apple Pencil released last year as the third-generation Apple Pencil in iOS code, so the fourth-generation model would be a new version that would likely succeed the second-generation Apple Pencil.
Additional code in the iOS 17.5 beta suggests that the Apple Pencil could gain a "squeeze" gesture for certain actions, and haptic feedback is also expected.
Third-Party Item Tracker Alerts
Apple and Google last year jointly announced a proposed industry specification to help combat the misuse of Bluetooth item trackers for unwanted tracking of individuals. As part of this initiative, Apple promised to expand AirTag-like "Found Moving With You" alerts to third-party item trackers in a future software update, which turns out to be iOS 17.5.
The first iOS 17.5 beta added references to alerts for third-party item trackers. For example: "You can disable this item and stop it from sharing its location with the owner. To do this, follow the instructions provided on a website by the manufacturer of this item."
Tile, Chipolo, Samsung, Eufy, and Pebblebee all expressed support for the industry specification, according to Apple's announcement last year.
In related news, Google launched its own Find My Device network last month.
Block All Participants in Group FaceTime Calls
iOS 17.5 beta code indicates that there may be a new "Block All Participants" option for group FaceTime calls, which could help users to fight spam.Related Roundups: iOS 17, iPadOS 17Related Forums: iOS 17, iPadOS 17This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
