Shana releases Informed Filler(r) for Java(t)
NEW YORK, NY, August 25, 1997: At the first Java Internet Business Expo,
Shana Corporation today announced that Informed Filler for Java, the latest
addition to their line of cross-platform electronic forms products, is now
shipping.
Informed Filler for Java brings the benefits of e-forms to the Web
platform. The Informed Java applet is used to fill out visually appealing,
intelligent forms in any Java capable Web browser, such as the Netscape
Communicator client software or Microsoft Explorer. Forms are created using
Informed Designer(r) on Windows (3.1x, 95, NT) or Mac OS and then saved for
use with Informed Filler for Java. When a form and the Java applet are
placed on your Web server, anyone with a Java capable browser can fill it
out. No additional client software is needed. No installation or
configuration process is required.
The explosive trend toward thin clients and network computers in
Internet/intranet/extranet environments has created a strong demand for
related business applications. Informed Filler for Java provides a familiar
forms experience (or “front-end”) to “back-end” corporate databases such as
Lotus Notes, Oracle, or any Web-connected database.
“Many organizations are looking to the thin client to cut administration
and maintenance costs,” said Don Murphy, President of Shana. “Informed
Filler for Java provides the productivity and cost saving benefits of
electronic forms while maintaining the cost effective thin client
environment. In addition, it provides richer content and more interactivity
for the user. We expect Informed Filler for Java to become the tool of
choice for data collection via the Web.”
“With Informed Filler for Java, you can have great looking forms on your
Web site, complete with built-in calculations, error checking, help
messages, choice lists, database lookups and more,” Don Murphy added. “And
for your most demanding applications, you can integrate Informed Filler for
Java with our more robust Windows (3.1x, 95, NT) and Mac OS Fillers.”
Informed Filler for Java offers many advantages over HTML forms: extensive,
on-line intelligence improves productivity and accuracy, and local
calculations and error checking reduce CGI programming, which in turn
reduces network traffic and server usage.
“Shana’s Informed Filler leverages the Java support in the Netscape ONE
platform to provide enterprise customers who are building network
applications with a platform-independent approach to electronic forms,”
said Rick Schell, senior vice president of the client and platform product
division at Netscape Communications Corporation. “By developing this Java
based application on Netscape ONE, Shana is providing organizations with an
e-forms solution that is both easy to deploy and easily accessible from the
over 65 million copies of Netscape client software in use today.”
A common use of a corporate intranet is to publish policies and procedures,
many of which are driven by forms. With Informed Filler for Java, forms
such as Vacation Requests, Time Sheets, and Expense forms can look better,
perform better and be more tightly integrated with their related
procedures. An employee needing to take time off, for example, locates and
reads the procedure, fills out a Vacation Request form and submits it to a
Web server for processing. In fact, an entire forms workflow system can be
designed using existing Web technologies and Informed Filler for Java.
“We are very encouraged by early customer reaction to Informed Filler for
Java, particularly with our Windows clients,” said John Murphy, VP of Sales
at Shana. “The ongoing evolution of Java support for Mac OS Web browsers
will continue to enhance our cross-platform solutions.”
