TENON UNVEILS NEW UNIX FOR POWER MACINTOSH

New POSIX-Certified Mach/BSD UNIX for Power Macs Now Available

Santa Barbara, CA, March 2, 1998. Tenon Intersystems is shipping a new
version of its award-winning UNIX for Power Macs. Power MachTen 4.1 is a
POSIX-compliant, BSD 4.4 UNIX, with a Mach kernel foundation, that operates
in concert with the Macintosh Operating System. The new release includes a
native fast file system, a validated Ada compiler, an enhanced suite of
UNIX software development tools, including Objective-C and Java, and a
high-performance X display and development environment. It also supports
SUN’s Network Information Service (NIS) and includes standard UNIX
filesharing (NFS) and a full complement of UNIX networking services.

Power MachTen creates a full preemptive multitasking, multithreaded
execution environment for UNIX applications. It shares the processor with
MacOS, enabling standard Macintosh applications, including Virtual PC, to
run simultaneously. Tenon has been shipping versions of UNIX for MacOS
since 1991. Customers have used this unique software as a laptop UNIX on
PowerBooks, as a UNIX software development tool to extend standard
Macintosh development environments, as a vehicle to port UNIX and X
applications to the Macintosh, and as a vehicle to integrate Macintosh
desktops with enterprise-wide systems.

By licensing Tenon’s UNIX libraries, developers have been able to bring
sophisticated UNIX software to MacOS in the form of Macintosh applications.
Because the underlying MachTen UNIX APIs are very similar to the core
Rhapsody OS (Apple’s next-generation operating system) APIs, developers,
including Tenon, have used this environment to create Macintosh
applications that run on MacOS today and later are easily ported to
Rhapsody, by recompiling and extending the user interface.

Power MachTen 4.1 includes the latest Apache web server (version 1.2.5),
with Tenon’s supercache performance enhancements and Macintosh extensions.
Power MachTen’s Apache supports multihoming, using Tenon’s built-in TCP
stack or Open Transport 1.3, and caching proxy service. Tenon’s Macintosh
extensions to Apache enable it to support a wide selection of both
Macintosh and UNIX plug-ins and CGIs. Also included is the latest sendmail
8.1 for multihoming mail, POP mail, BIND 8.1 for domain name service, and
wu-ftp 2.4 for multihoming ftp service. MachTen is a multiuser system with
remote login capabilities.

The new release supports a complete suite of GNU software develoment tools,
including C & Objective-C (gcc), C++ (g++), Ada95 (gnat), Fortran77 (g77),
and the gdb source debbugger. It also includes Java (kaffe), a suite of
popular scripting tools (i.e., Perl, tcl/tk, MacPerl), popular editors (vi,
emacs, BBEdit Lite, Alpha), and hundreds of standard UNIX applications and
utilities.

The package includes a complete implementation of X11R6 with 24-bit color
to enable the display of remote X applications, as well as the porting or
developing of UNIX X client applications. An OpenGL option (sold
separately) is pre-installed. Once customers purchase the unlocking script,
they can display remote OpenGL X applications and develop OpenGL
applications for MacOS or Rhapsody.

The native fast file system is implemented within a single Macintosh file.
It provides a two to ten-fold performance improvement, depending upon what
you are doing. Power MachTen runs with MacOS 7.x, 8.0, or 8.1 and is
compatible with HFS and HFS+.
