Maxum Development Ships Rumpus 1.2
Upgrade Eases Administration And Adds Features To
Class-Leading FTP Server For Mac OS

MacWorld, July 10, 1998 — Maxum Development Corporation announced that it
began shipping Rumpus version 1.2 earlier this week. Rumpus, the premier
FTP server for Mac OS, provides workstation-like levels of performance and
reliability combined with the ease of use found only on the Macintosh. The
new version further extends Rumpus’ class-leading feature set with new
options that simplify FTP server management, strengthen security, and
automate administration.

Improved Server Management

Rumpus 1.2 includes a number of improvements that offer new options to FTP
server managers. Useraccounts now feature definable maximum disk space
usage, enabling server administrators to limit how much content can be
uploaded by each user. New access privileges have also been added, giving
administrators finer control over what users can and cannot do on
theserver. This includes new options that make “drop boxes” (where users
can upload files to the FTP server, but can’t view or download other files)
both easier to manage and easier for users to access. Most importantly,
Rumpus 1.2 includes Web-based administration of user accounts, enabling
administrators to create, update, or delete user accounts from any browser
on the Internet.

Improved Security

Several minor improvements have been made to increase security, including
better control over user access privileges, the ability to create
additional “anonymous” user accounts, and the addition of more detail in
log files. Also, a new option disables Mac OS alias files when they are
uploaded to the server, avoiding an entire class of potential security
holes. (No such breaches have been reported, and Maxum does not expect
aliases to represent a major security risk. This feature has been
incorporated as a pro-active measure to reduce the possibility of attacks.)
Finally, FTP users can now be permitted to change their own passwords using
a simple Web form, improving security by encouraging frequent password
rotation.

Automated Administration

Rumpus can now “roll” log files into an archive on a periodic basis
automatically. Administration can also be automated using a new AppleEvent
suite that enables user account management from AppleScript and other
AppleEvent capable applications. Adjustable type and creator settings for
uploaded files further reduces administration headaches, and drop folders
are automatically created for new user accounts when created via the Web
administration interface.
