[MD1] InterLok 1.2 – Software Rental Features

For Release: Monday, April 19, 1999

PACE Anti-Piracy Releases Version 1.2 of InterLok for Macintosh;
Update Supports Software Rentals, Offers Enhanced Challenge/Response
Options

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA – April 19, 1999 – PACE Anti-Piracy, the leading
developer of secure software distribution systems for the Macintosh
and Windows operating systems, today released an update to its
InterLok for Macintosh product. InterLok for Macintosh 1.2 better
supports software rentals, a distribution mechanism that allows
software developers to broaden customer options for acquiring their
products. Using InterLok, software developers can provide their
customers with time-limited product licenses and “pay as you use”
rental arrangements, or securely allow customers to evaluate software
before purchasing it. The new version of InterLok released today also
offers a wider range of challenge/response customization options for
developers and publishers using InterLok for the distribution of
their software products.

InterLok is a fifth-generation tool set for protecting, distributing
and selling software electronically and via traditional models such
as the telephone and facsimile. InterLok Pro for Macintosh includes
all of the features of InterLok for Macintosh, plus additional
distribution, security and flexibility options. With the release of
InterLok for Macintosh 1.2, PACE Anti-Piracy adds specific product
capabilities for the software rental marketplace, a fast-growing
Internet commerce arena.

“InterLok has been setting the direction for electronic software
distribution and anti-piracy solutions for more than a decade,” said
PACE president and CEO, Allen Cronce. “Software rental presents a new
revenue stream opportunity to software developers and publishers that
we have addressed with this latest release. Our latest Macintosh
product better enables our customers to take advantage of this new
distribution mechanism securely and with the confidence that they
have control over the use of their products in the global
marketplace.”

There are several ways in which PACE’s customers are using InterLok’s
software rental capabilities. One leading developer of high quality
color separation tools has set up a debit account system for
distributing their products. “Many of our customers can’t afford to
buy our high-end product,” said the president of this company, “but
by delivering it over the Internet, we are able to allow them to
purchase as many increments as they need, specify a time window in
which they can use it, and for a minimal investment, they are able to
try and use the best product we have available by ‘charging’ against
their account for every use. In our experience, the distribution
power of InterLok can’t be matched. We have confidence in PACE’s
software security technology and appreciate the flexibility it offers
us.”

New Product Features
===================
In addition to its support of software rentals, the new version of
InterLok for Macintosh includes the following new features:
o Key Diskettes can now be generated on Apple’s G3 systems.
o Better multi-platform support, enabling unlocking for both Macintosh and
Windows clients.
o Authorization can now be installed to drives on any SCSI bus, including
Ultrawide.
o Allows specification of an expiration date for responses to challenges.
Previous versions only allowed date specification for serial numbers.
o New PACE Interface API calls allow implementation of a custom
