Europe bans spam, though effects may be moot

The European Parliament has voted to ban spam, according to The Register. The new legislation, expected to be in place some time next year, would require users to “opt in” to receive commercial email. Pundits note, however, that the legislation will only have a minimal impact on reducing spam, as an estimated nine out of ten pieces of spam are untraceable or come from outside of Europe, which is beyond the scope of the new law. Meanwhile, ZDNet Australia reports that T3 Direct, a company that sends spam, has filed suit against Joseph McNicol, alleging that the individual caused T3’s IPs to be blacklisted on the spnews.org anti-spam site. The suit, believed to be the first of its kind, seeks damages of AU$43,750 to cover T3’s costs for new IPs, equipment, and lost revenue.
