Apple design, the Cube, iPod and more

An interesting story in the Financial Times today has Sathnam Sanghera talking to Jonathan Ive, Apple’s chief design guru, while he is present to collect a D&AD gold award for the iPod, Apple’s popular MP3 player. The interview covers Apple’s design philosophy, Newton, the new iMac and more, but of particular note is this quote about the Cube: “The important thing is that we keep on innovating. We made a mistake with the Cube — we thought a lot of our professional customers might like to have a smaller computer in exchange for giving up expandability, but we were wrong. It was a great design, but the wrong concept. But, you know, if we don’t make a mistake like that every once in a while then maybe we’re not trying hard enough. Mistakes are the result of innovating.”
