New Jersey school district considering iBook program

The Cherry Hill school district in New Jersey could launch a program as early as this spring to provide wireless laptops to every student and teacher beginning with the fourth grade, reports the Courier Post. The article notes that Apple was the first company to make a presentation to the district. Apple made its proposal at a board of education meeting this past week. Presentations from Dell, Microsoft, Intel and Compaq will follow in the next few weeks. “We’re looking at a tool for learning — not learning a discrete subject but a tool that truly changes the learning approach,” superintendent of schools Morton Sherman said. With the laptops, as many as 9,000 students from fourth grade up could be issued a tool they could take home every day. “Let’s make everything even for students and get rid of the digital divide,” said Douglas Eicher, Apple’s area sales director for northeast education.
