Apple says final 802.11g standard misleading

As we reported yesterday, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has approved the final standard for the 802.11g wireless networking specification, which Apple utilizes in its new AirPort Extreme products. Computerworld reports that the specification will have “a true throughput for Internet-type connections of between 10M and 20Mbit/sec., far lower than 54Mbit/sec. raw data rate initially billed for the standard.” However, Apple vice president of software Mike Bell told MacCentral that it has not been throttled back at all, and used the more popular 802.11b specification as an example: “802.11g is still a 54Mbit/sec standard. 802.11b is 11Mbit/sec, but your actual throughput is somewhere between 4 and 5-1/2Mbit/sec.” Bell said the data rate has always been approximately 20Mbit/sec (4 to 5 times higher than 802.11b) and hasn’t changed in the final draft standard.
