Analysts say DRM will legitimize ‘pirates’

An article on the Computerworld Hong Kong Web site notes that Ovum, a European analyst and consulting firm, has published a report saying that DRM (Digital Rights Management) will turn file-sharing “pirates” into legitimate consumers. What won’t work, they say, are the lawsuit actions of the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States. “It is time to focus on how to turn illegal usage into legitimate usage,” writes Dario Betti, Senior Analyst at Ovum, in the report. “The recent success of Apple’s iTunes shows that it can be done. It is time to look at digital rights management (both the technology and business model) to see how to provide a compelling service to user.”
