US Navy purchases 260 Linux-powered Xserves

Terra Soft Solutions said Wednesday that it has been awarded a contract from Lockheed Martin to provide 260 Xserves running its Yellow Dog Linux operating system to the United States Navy. The Xserves will be used in “a unique sonar imaging system” in a number of Navy submarines. “United States Navy submarines utilize on-board HPC clusters for the realtime image processing. These systems are revised and upgraded on a rotational basis. Lockheed Martin has chosen to move with the Apple Xserves and Yellow Dog Linux. This combination provides a solution twice as dense, less power consumptive, and higher performance than the previous solution at a similar cost.” All 260 units will be delivered by the end of October 2003.
