The Register: ‘iTunes DRM cracked wide open’

Back in November we noted that the Norwegian programmer who created the first widely-used tool for cracking the copy protection technology found on DVDs was going after Apple’s iTunes — and he has. The Register is now reporting that Jon Lech Johansen has figured out a way of allowing people to play songs they’ve purchased on iTunes Music Store on their GNU/Linux computers. “Apple is widely expected to announce more locked music playback hardware at the MacWorld [sic] show in San Francisco this week. But with support growing for flat fee licensing models even amongst record industry executives, today’s DRM Goldrush (and the ensuing iTunes vs Windows Media war) could be a very short lived skirmish,” notes the article.
