Forbes: ‘Apple’s Supercomputing Scientists’

An article appearing on Forbes today by Matthew Herper discusses what role Apple has to play in the field of genomics — the study of how many genes work together within organisms. Several scientists are interviewed and the article looks at the supercomputer cluster built from 1,100 G5s at Virginia Tech, particularly when it comes to cost. “Despite its reputation, [Apple] is not more expensive,” says William Van Etten, co-founder of the BioTeam, a consulting group that has set up Mac clusters for biologists. “When including maintenance and support, one could easily argue that it’s cheaper.”
