Digital music sales to more than double this year

According to a new report from JupiterResearch, digital music sales will more than double compared to last year, reaching more than US$270 million in 2004. The firm also said that the online music market will grow to $1.7 billion in 2009 — 12 percent of all consumer music spending. “Over time, revenues for digital subscription services will outpace those of digital download, which will remain a market for potential buyers to sample music before purchasing the actual CD in the near-term,” Jupiter said. Meanwhile, U.S. shipments of digital music players will grow over 50 percent in 2004 to over 5 million, and will continue to grow almost 50 percent per year for the next several years.
