Toshiba 60GB 1.8-inch hard drive due by year’s end

Toshiba today officially announced the 60GB version of its 1.8-inch hard disk drive, which is expected to make its way into the next iPod revision. The new drive, which is due in the fourth quarter 2004, features improved shock tolerance, power consumption and vibration control for better performance in portable consumer electronics devices. In early June, Toshiba said that the 60GB drive would enter mass production during July or August and that it had already received an order from Apple. However, Greg Joswiak, vice president of hardware product marketing at Apple, dismissed rumors of a 60GB iPod. “We have no plans in regard to announcing 60GB models,” Joswiak said. “We are trying to create a much more compelling lineup with two models for 20 and 40 gigabytes at extremely compelling prices.”
