Henrico school board picks Dell over Apple

Henrico County, Virginia’s School Board voted yesterday to not renew its contract with Apple and instead distribute more than 15,000 Dell laptops to every high school student and teacher next year in a deal worth nearly $18 million. “The unanimous vote to broker a deal with Dell represents a victory for the Round Rock, Texas-based company in its battle with Apple for superiority in the fast-growing education technology market,” reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “Four years ago, Apple and Henrico struck a deal that drew national attention for being one of the first initiatives to give every middle and high school student a laptop. Apple, which submitted a bid to continue its high school contract with Henrico, still supplies the county’s middle school students and teachers with laptops until next June.”
