Code Folio practical, functional with just a couple of missteps

It’s hard to find an iPad case that offers something different. HEX has accomplished this with its US$79.95. Code Folio (http://www.shophex.com/product/HX1080). It’s not revolutionary, but it does offer a spin on the traditional folio case.

The Code Folio — compatible with the iPad 2 and the new iPad — combines elements of protection, accessory pockets and multiple viewing angles. It sports a a custom molded soft-touch bed.

Not only does the Code Folio offer protection from accidental bumps and drops, it also offers two document pockets, card slots and a pen/stylus holder. Unfortunately, the latter wasn’t big enough to hold either a Bamboo duo or NuScribe Stylus.

The built-in hinge feature and molded stops/bumps allow for multiple viewing angles of the screen. Unfortunately, the stops/bumps don’t accommodate what, for me, is the optimal angle for typing.

The Code Folio is made of genuine leather and comes in three colors: black, British Tan and red. The British Tan has an especially classic, sophisticated appearance. The design of the folio makes it easy to reach all the buttons on the Apple tablet.

The Code Folio is thicker than I had expected. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but in a world gone wild over svelte, thin products, it’s something to note.

I was surprised to find that the Code Folio lacks auto-locking magnets. There is an elastic band to hold it shut, but that feels so … 2010.

Overall, the HEX product is a nice folio with clean lines and practical elements, as well as good looks. Perhaps a follow-up version will add a lower typing angle and an auto-locking mechanism.
