Boxcryptor — Mac-compatible encryption software — releases cloud storage survey results

Boxcryptor (www.boxcryptor.com) carried out a large-scale customer survey in spring 2019  about the behavior of security-conscious cloud users. One finding: data protection awareness doesn’t rule out the use of large U.S. cloud storage providers – thanks to encryption.

Boxcryptor is ac encryption software for Dropbox, Google Drive and other providers. It allows Mac users to encrypt and decrypt files with a Boxcryptor file format that was recently introduced. Boxcrypter is available in a free, basic version. There’s also an unlimited personal version for $48 per year, and an unlimited business version for $96 per year. A 14-day demo is available.

Boxcryptor is designed after the zero knowledge paradigm. This means that no third party can access your data, as it’s all under your control. Boxcryptor encrypts all your data on your device before transferring anything to your cloud storage provider.

It automatically detects your installed cloud storage providers and adds them to the virtual Boxcryptor drive. Every file you add to – or create within – the drive can be encrypted. If you want to edit an encrypted file, just open it, make your changes and save it.

“Our spring customer survey shows that over the years a personal recommendation has become increasingly important when it comes to choosing to encrypt data,” said Andrea Pfundmeier, CEO of Boxcryptor. “Our most important selling point, however, remains the large number of cloud storage vendors we support. This will remain one of our priorities in the future,” adds Robert Freudenreich, CTO of Boxcryptor. From now on, the founding team will have regular surveys carried out.

3,000 users of the Boxcryptor encryption software took part in the survey. The survey was published in German, English and Russian. The respondents came from 71 countries.

Key findings from the survey:

° Two-thirds of respondents use more than one cloud to store their encrypted data.

° Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive are the most popular cloud stores.

° Personal recommendations are playing an increasing role in the installation of encryption software.
