I really enjoy working on my 24-inch iMac (see my review here). But a common complaint is that all-in-one has a dearth of ports. Fair enough. But Satechi’s aluminum USB-C Clamp Hub overcomes this limitation.
Every 24-inch iMac features two Thunderbolt ports. The 8-core iMac configuration (which I own and highly recommend though it costs more) offers two additional USB-C ports and features a 1Gbps Ethernet port in the power adapter. Whatever your all-in-one configuration, the aluminum USB-C Clamp Hub adds functionality via a USB-C port, three USB 3.0 ports with up to 5Gb/s for fast and secure data transfer, and a Micro/SD card reader. All this is through a single USB-C connection. And the Satechi hub is exclusively designed for the 24-inch; sorry, it won’t fit 2020 or earlier models.
To use, you just plug into one of the iMac’s backside USB-C ports and use the adjustable knob to fasten the hub to the bottom of a desktop computer. No additional drivers or installation are needed. Be careful when attaching it, so you don’t scratch the desktop computer. The photo below shows it attached to my iMac (on the bottom, right side).
Satechi’s new USB-C Clamp Hub is available now for pre-order in silver for $54.99 at Satechi.net. (I received an advance review copy). Customers can score 15% off pre-orders with code “IMAC15” from now until mid-September.
My only issue with the USB-C Clamp is that it only comes in silver. The iMac is available in blue (my choice), green, pink, orange, yellow, purple, and silver flavors, and I’d like peripherals that match my iMac’s hue. After all, the choice of colors is one of the fun elements of the new all-in-one.
That said, the 3.6-ounce USB-C Clamp doesn’t take up much space. It’s only 4.6 x 1.6 x 0.98 inches and adds some needed functionality to the iMac.
