New Software Will Help Speed Transactions on the Internet
A new software from Israel will help speed transaction on the Internet by
making it faster and easier to update programs, pictures, databases and
other files. Call Update It! the software works in a different way than
traditional compression. Compression tries to reduce the size of a file
by using algorithms that look for recurrent patterns. Update It! works
by comparing an original and an updated file, and extracting the difference
between the two –called the “Delta.” The Delta file is sent as the update
file, and when received it is combined with the original.
The software can be customized. While the Update It! software engine works
effectively with most files, the program can be optimized for certain
applications. For example, it is in use in Israel in the banking system
for updating accounts databases.
The advantage of the Update It! approach is much smaller file sizes than
can be achieved with compression methods.
By dramatically reducing file size, internet traffic jams, especially on busy
servers, can be eliminated or reduced. And, for program updates, many times
the user does not have to re-install his or her software. In fact, the entire
updating process can be done in the background, if desired.
Because the Delta file is small and carries very little information, it has
inherent
in it considerable security, even without resort to encryption.
Looking ahead, the Israeli team is working on a version of Update It! for
videos.
