BARE BONES SOFTWARE UPGRADES BBEDIT WITH RELEASE OF 4.0.3
Bedford, MA — Bare Bones Software, Inc. today announced the release of
version 4.0.3 of BBEdit, their popular and award winning text editor for
Mac(TM) OS-compatible systems. This new version includes a variety of
enhancements to the program’s feature set and capabilities:
*Improved FTP Support*
The FTP tool, used to support the “Open from FTP Server” and “Save to
FTP Server” commands, has been improved in a number of areas. BBEdit now
features greater compatibility with Windows NT and VMS servers, and
supports symbolic links on FTP servers. The updated FTP tool offers the
ability to select between active and passive FTP transfer mode — the
latter being necessary when traversing intranet firewalls. For greater
usability, the FTP tool now offers the option to display Finder-style
document icons in its file listing, with the icons being determined by
Internet Config file suffix mappings.
*Improved Coding Support*
BBEdit 4.0.3 features several improvements which are of particular
interest to software developers. Function navigation in C++ and Object
Pascal source files has been improved, and several bugs which hindered
integration with Metrowerks CodeWarrior have been corrected. In
addition, BBEdit 4.0.3 is able to load CodeWarrior project documents for
searching and comparison with greater speed and reliability than in
previous versions. Finally, an enhanced “Open Selection” command now
provides the ability to search for a file by name if the user chooses
“Open Selection…” with no selection range.
*Improved HTML Tools*
BBEdit 4.0.3 includes version 2.1.2 of the BBEdit HTML Tools, which
feature improved performance and reliability in a number of areas.
*And a Host of Other Changes*
In addition to the improvements mentioned above, BBEdit 4.0.3 features
an assortment of other enhancements, including: improved performance on
Macintosh models that use the PowerPC 603 and 604 processors, the
ability to Cut and Copy much larger amounts of text than before, and
optimizations to reduce the amount of time required for BBEdit 4.0.3 to
launch.

About BBEdit
—– ——
Since its first commercial release in 1993, BBEdit has established a
following among software developers, HTML authors, Internet users, and
many other Macintosh(R) users who need its plain-text editing and
transformation capabilities, and who value its integration with other
applications and new technologies. BBEdit was the first HTML editor to
be included with the Apple Internet Server Solution, and has become the
weapon of choice for HTML authors and webmasters all over the world, due
in large measure to its power and ease of use.
BBEdit has received accolades from press and users alike, receiving a
four-and-a-half mouse rating from MacUser Magazine (October, 1996) and a
five-diamond rating — the highest possible — from MacWEEK (September
30, 1996).
At the MacWorld Expo San Francisco in January 1997, the industry
recogmized BBEdit’s leadership by awarding it the MacUser Editor’s
Choice Award for Best New Development tool and the MacWorld World Class
award for best Web Authoring tool.
BBEdit has an established tradition of technological leadership. It was
the first commercial text editor to integrate with Symantec and Apple
development tools, support emerging technologies such as Apple Guide,
AppleScript, Macintosh Drag and Drop, xtnd(TM), PowerTalk, and Internet
integration, and to take advantage of the high performance PowerPC(TM)
processor used in the Power Macintosh(R) platform.
Bare Bones Software invites anyone interested in learning more about
BBEdit to visit their web site at (http://www.barebones.com), or to send
