Apple Delivers AppleShare IP 6.0 Major Server Software Upgrade

Adds Support for Sherlock Server-Side Searching, Windows Clients and IMAP
Mail Services

CUPERTINO, California — August 24, 1998 — Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced the availability of AppleShare IP 6.0, a significant upgrade to
the Company’s award-winning Mac OS server software and file-server suite.
AppleShare IP 6.0 delivers new features and performance improvements to
critical network servicessuch as file, email, print, web and ftpunder a
single administration and security system, giving users simplified access
to information on their Mac OS server.

“AppleShare IP 6.0 is the worlds easiest-to-use server software,” said Phil
Schiller, vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing at Apple Computer,
Inc. “AppleShare now supports advanced server-side searches using Sherlock
technology. Additionally, we’ve really tuned performance and AppleShare IP
is now twice as fast as Windows NT servers at performing large file
transfers from Mac clients.”

AppleShare IP 6.0 Features

* New file sharing support for Windows clients through the Server Message
Block (SMB) protocol, allowing Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT
clients to natively access AppleShare IP 6.0 servers. This provides
cross-platform support for users who have networks with mixed clients.
AppleShare IP 6.0 can also register with a WINS server for inclusion on a
Windows NT intranet.

* Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAPv4) support that now complements
the more traditional POP and SMTP mail servers, giving users the
convenience and flexibility of viewing email without downloading to their
computer, as well as an email message storage system capable of conducting
server-side searches using Apple’s Sherlock technology, offering users fast
accessibility to information on the server.

* Twice the performance of Windows NT Servers when Mac clients copy large
documents or folders.

* Improved scalability with the ability to support up to 500 simultaneous
file server clients and 10,000 individual registered users in the server
database.

* Expanded print server support for TCP/IP through industry-standard
LPR/LPD printing, allowing both Macintosh and Windows users to access
printers on AppleShare IP 6.0 servers via TCP/IP. The new printer server
also includes increased security options to control user access to print
queues.

* Support for third-party enhancements and plug-ins which allow users to
customize AppleShare’s file, web and security capabilities.

System Requirements
AppleShare IP 6.0 requires an Apple Power Macintosh or server with a
PowerPC G3, 604e, 604 or 601 processor, and also supports the Power
Macintosh 6500 computer; Mac OS 8.1 with Open Transport 1.3 or later; a
minimum of 48MB of RAM with virtual memory turned on, or 64MB of RAM
without virtual memory; a minimum of 40MB of available hard disk space; and
a CD-ROM drive.

AppleShare IP 6.0 is available now from Apple and Apple resellers.
Estimated retail pricing is U.S. $499 for a 10-client license, and scales
up to an unlimited client license that can support up to 500 simultaneous
