Dartmouth College Releases Two Network Management Packages

HANOVER, NH. Two advanced network management applications,
InterMapper 2.1 and SNMP Watcher 1.0, are now available from
Dartmouth College.

InterMapper 2.1 is an upgrade to the sophisticated multiprotocol
network monitoring tool now used by hundreds of network managers
worldwide. SNMP Watcher is a new tool designed to retrieve
information from devices on multiprotocol networks.

“We built these programs to manage our own campus network because we
couldn’t find anything comparable on the market,” says Richard Brown,
Manager of Special Projects at Dartmouth. “These tools make complex
network management vastly easier.”

InterMapper 2.1 is Free Update

InterMapper 2.1 is an update to the monitoring package that the
College has been marketing commercially since 1996. InterMapper 2.1
introduces a number of enhancements to its built-in web server, which
gives the ability to view network information from a standard Web
browser. The new InterMapper 2.1 also provides:

o Clickable image maps. From your web browser, you can click on
any device to show detailed information about the particular device
and its network interfaces. The network manager can easily view
uptime, packet and error rates, network addresses, and other critical
information remotely.

o Highly compressed images using PNG (Portable Network
Graphics). This image format for the web gives much better
compression (and thus greater speed when displaying graphics) as well
as greater clarity than JPEG images.

o Real-time strip charts–windows that show a plot of
statistics such as packet rates, byte rates, error rates, and link
utilization–are now viewable from the Web browser. A network map can
have several strip charts showing unique sets of statistics.

InterMapper 2.1 is available now for $795; educational institutions
will receive a 50% discount. InterMapper 2.1 is a free upgrade to
current customers of InterMapper 2.0. InterMapper requires a
Macintosh computer with System 7 or greater, 4 mega-bytes of RAM, and
a network connection. A free demonstration version is available at
http://www.dartmouth.edu/netsoftware/.

SNMP Watcher 1.0 Now Available

SNMP Watcher is an easy-to-use tool for retrieving information using
the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPv1), a standard protocol
for monitoring and controlling network components. Network managers
can use SNMP Watcher to query network components for information
about their configuration, activity and errors.

SNMP Watcher collects information from standard SNMP Management
Information Bases (MIBs) and displays that data in tabular form
on-screen. It can also log successive readings of values from MIBs,
so that a network manager can track these variables over time.

“SNMP Watcher is a great network troubleshooting tool. I’ve used it
to track down rogue nodes in our network,” says Bill Fisher, the
developer of SNMP Watcher. “I originally designed it as a test tool
for InterMapper, but it has come to be quite useful in its own right.”

SNMP Watcher 1.0 is available for $99.00. It requires a Macintosh
computer running System 7 or newer, two megabytes of RAM, and a
network connection. A free demonstration version is available at
http://www.dartmouth.edu/netsoftware/.

Dartmouth College has a 15 year history of developing powerful, yet
easy-to-use network software. In addition to InterMapper and SNMP
Watcher, their products include the well-known Fetch FTP client;
BlitzMail, a high-performance electronic mail server with Macintosh
and Windows clients; and MacPing, a troubleshooting tool for
multiprotocol networks. To find more information about these
