McGallen & Bolden launches its first Java application for web site
enhancement, web-based training and presentation
SINGAPORE, Monday, June 28, 1999 – McGallen & Bolden Associates, the
leading Asian consulting group in communications, technology and
training, has launched its first Java application, JAEM, for web
developers, trainers, and anyone who needs to make web-enabled
presentations on the fly.
JAEM (pronounced “jam”) Applet stands for Java Applet Expanded Menu,
is a simple to learn and use 100% clean Java applet that allows
experienced web developers and less-experienced web page authors such
as trainers, presenters and managers to quickly author
graphically-rich navigation systems, lightweight web-based training
(WBT), as well as presentations for sales, marketing or other
purposes.
JAEM was developed by McGallen & Bolden in Singapore, and its head
office in Dublin, Ireland. The project was led by Seamus Phan,
currently the chief information officer (CIO) for the world firm and
in Asia.
“We are seeing a convergence of training and communications, with the
increasing adoption of the Web technologies by large and mid-sized
organizations around the world. In a survey we conducted earlier in
1998, about 43% believed that CBT (including web-based training or
WBT) is more effective and productive than classroom training, while
a resounding 75% believed that CBT will save companies more money
than classroom training,” said Seamus Phan, CIO and partner of
McGallen & Bolden (Worldwide). “As a small consulting group that does
not compete by quantity of its workforce, we leverage our expertise
by using cutting-edge technologies, and absorbing only experts in
their relevant fields to work within the group. Therefore, since
early 1999, we have brought in highly skilled European talents who
are expert programmers (some have worked on highly advanced military
and scientific research fields) to work in collaboration with our
management consultants. JAEM represents only a baby step for us, and
if you walk alongside with us, you will begin to unravel a far larger
picture where a full suite of products geared at the enterprise of
any size, will be actualized.”
McGallen & Bolden has recently signed with Wayfarer to be its Fortify
128-bit encryption patch for Netscape Web browser software to empower
customers for fully secure e-commerce. Prior to that, the firm has
launched its Human Resource Intranet Template System that is also
available for purchase on the Web. McGallen & Bolden is working
towards a fully-empowered Internet learning and e-commerce solutions
group.
Easy to learn and configure
JAEM requires some knowledge of HTML coding, with some handcoding of
web pages through the Java parameter definitions within the web page.
A typical web page author will need less than 5 minutes to understand
the parameters and start coding. Once a single line of web page
redirection is defined where a navigational text or graphical button
points to a web page, creating links for other pages will be rather
easy to do.
Applications of JAEM
JAEM is intended for these applications:
1) Interactive web sites that require graphical navigation;
2) Lightweight web-based training (WBT) where trainers who are not
Internet experts can put together WBT programs for quick deployment,
without complex layouts. At the same time, these simple WBT programs
will run on almost any platform that runs Java, and work well on
limited bandwidth across public networks. No proprietary presentation
tool today can yet achieve this level of portability and simplicity.
3) Lightweight presentations that are extremely portable, where
presenters can easily carry their presentations with them anywhere,
and work across different hardware and operating platforms. No
proprietary presentation tool today can yet achieve this level of
portability and simplicity.
Comlete compatibility across platforms
JAEM can work across frame-based layouts, and is compatible with all
Java-compliant hardware platforms and operating systems.
Current supported Web browsers include:
– Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x and above
– Netscape Communicator/Navigator 4.x and above
– HotJava
– iCab
JAEM also runs on these platforms that have Java-compatible Web browsers:
– Microsoft Windows 95/98 and Windows NT (x86)
– Apple Mac OS (PowerPC)
– SGI Irix (Mips)
– Sun Solaris (Sparc/x86)
– BSD, FreeBSD, BSDI (x86)
– Linux (x86)
– MKLinux and LinuxPPC (PowerPC)
– DEC-OSF + Dec UNIX (Alpha)
– Sun SunOS (Sparc)
– IBM OS/2 (x86)
