FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Metrowerks Delivers Comprehensive Java(tm) Technology
Development Tools for Wireless Devices
CodeWarrior for Java(tm), Version 6.0 is the First Tool Chain to Support
J2ME Application Development for the Mobile Information Device (MID) Profile
AUSTIN, Texas-November 20, 2000-Metrowerks today announced a comprehensive
set of Java development tools that can be used to create applications for
the growing number of Java-enabled wireless computing devices entering the
market. The tools, which will be available November 30, are the first to
support the Mobile Information Device (MID) profile, targeted at wireless
devices with limited memory and processor power.
CodeWarrior(r) for Java(tm), Version 6.0 is a powerful, award-winning
integrated development environment (IDE) for programming 100% Pure Java
technology-based applications using Sun Microsystems’ Java(tm) 2 Platform
Micro Edition (J2ME), PersonalJava(tm) and Java(tm) 2 Platform Standard
Edition (J2SE) standards. The tools help reduce time to market by allowing
developers to create, compile, link, emulate, test, and debug J2SE,
PersonalJava, and J2ME applications within a single, tightly integrated
development environment.
“We’re allowing developers to use the same set of tools from the same
package to create innovative applications for a whole range of hardware —
from desktop computers to the most sophisticated, cutting edge wireless
devices,” said Greg Stoner, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks.
“CodeWarrior’s open and customizable environment provides developers with
enhanced productivity, support for team collaboration, and the fastest time
to market for creating Java technology-based applications and services.”
Metrowerks has also announced CodeWarrior support for Sun’s
PersonalJava(tm) Platform, as well as a relationship with Sun to deliver
development tools for the Java Card(tm) platform.
“We believe that Metrowerks’ support for technologies such as Java(tm) 2
Platform, Micro Edition and Mobile Information Device profile play an
important role in proliferating our J2ME technology-based platform across a
wide range of markets,” said Curtis Sasaki, director of Product Marketing,
Sun’s Consumer Technologies. “The availability of a popular development
environment such as CodeWarrior further enhances Java technology
developers’ ability to create innovative applications and services for
wireless devices, Internet appliances, and smart cards.”
CodeWarrior for Java provides a state-of-the art project manager and build
system, class browser and code navigation system, text editor, debugger,
emulators, and drag & drop graphical user interface (GUI) development
tools. Developer productivity is enhanced with wizards for creating
applets, applications and JavaBeans. CodeWarrior supports Java Developers
Kits (JDK) 1.1.x, 1.2.x, 1.3.x, and MRJ 2.2.x (on Mac OS and Mac OS X
Public Beta).
The tools also offer extensibility and customization options, including an
open application programming interface (API) which allows programmers to
“plug-in” third-party tools. The IDE also includes an intuitive graphical
differentiation and merge tool for comparing and syncing source code and
text files quickly and easily. CodeWarrior can also import and export
project and target settings in XML to allow for quick collaborative
development.
Comprehensive Support for Java Technology-Based Wireless Devices
CodeWarrior for Java offers the most comprehensive support for the J2ME
Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device
(MID) profile, both targeted at wireless devices with limited memory and
processor power. This support allows developers to quickly create Java
technology-based applications and services for CLDC/MID-enabled wireless
devices such as mobile phones and pagers.
Motorola’s next-generation multiple communication handset platform for
iDEN(r) networks will be the first to utilize the CLDC support in
CodeWarrior. iDEN technology makes it possible for users to make and
receive phone calls, instantly communicate with one or hundreds of
individuals with the touch of a button, receive text messages, access
Internet information, send and receive email, and allow the phone to
function as a wireless modem. With the addition of J2ME platform support,
the next generation iDEN phones can run local and network-based Java
applications, allowing organizations to extend their networks to the mobile
environment.
“Metrowerks’ CodeWarrior provides developers with the tools they need to
create innovative applications for our J2ME-enabled multiple communication
phones, and get them to market as fast as possible,” said Bill Werner,
corporate vice president of Motorola, Inc. and general manager of the iDEN
Subscriber Group.
PointBase Included in CodeWarrior
Included in CodeWarrior for Java, Version 6.0 is the PointBase database,
which meets the 100% Pure Java TM certification standard and has a small
memory footprint, ideal for applications targeted toward smart devices. The
agreement gives Metrowerks an embedded pure Java database, helping boost
the productivity of Java developers writing database applications for
mobile information devices.
“The addition of PointBase to Metrowerks CodeWarrior for Java provides a
significant benefit for developers targeting mobile and wireless devices.
Now, Java developers are able to develop applications and databases
simultaneously, and in one environment,” said Bruce Scott, president and
CEO, PointBase, Inc. “The combination of PointBase and CodeWarrior offers
developers the smallest Java database footprint available, a powerful
development environment, fully JDBC and SQL compliant solution and
synchronization with all major enterprise databases.”
