Apple today announced that this week marks the second anniversary of the grand opening of its first retail store. The company said that since then, it has opened 57 retail stores in 26 states, hosted over 15 million visitors and sold over US$650 million of products through its retail stores. Apple also said that during the next 12 months it will open 20 new stores, including one in downtown Chicago, on North Michigan Avenue (June 27); its first store in San Francisco, in Union Square (spring 2004); and its first retail store outside of the U.S., in Tokyo’s Ginza shopping district (early 2004). These three locations will be “high profile” store formats, like the SoHo store in New York City.
