In his column for CNET News.com today, Michael Kanellos ponders an alternative history of the technology industry. As part of that report, he questions what would have happened if Apple had originally licensed the Mac OS. “If Apple had given PC makers the right to bundle the Mac operating system into computers, the theory goes, competition would have come to the OS market. Microsoft would not have ever wielded monopoly power, and security would have never been a problem,” he says. “Unfortunately, that’s probably not how the script would have turned out.”
