A report on the Financial Times site today notes that Universal Music, the world’s largest music company, will be throwing their support behind SpiralFrog, a start-up company that will offer free music downloads. The service, which is expected to launch in December, will reply on advertising for its revenue, moving away from Apple’s 99 cent-per-song model. The story also notes that a “report released last month by the International Federation of Phonographic Industries revealed there were still 40 illegal downloads for every legal one.”
