Verizon Wireless CEO Daniel S. Mead told “The Wall Street Journal” (http://macte.ch/9UJ7z) that the company sold more iPhone 4s during its initial launch than any other product in the carrier’s history, countering reports of disappointing sales.

Compared to the usually large crowds that have greeted previous launches of the iPhone, the Verizon iPhone launch saw modest crowds at some high-profile locations in major cities. However, Mead says that’s because most of the sales were online (about 60%).

At peak sales times the CEO said the iPhone brought 100 times more orders than usual to the Verizon Wireless website but didn’t give specific numbers. Mead said it wouldn’t release iPhone sales figures until the company’s next earnings release.
