Let the Apple Car rumors roll on. Apple manufacturing partner, Foxconn, will begin construction of all-electric vehicle plants in the U.S. Thailand this year, according to Nikkei Asia. The goal is to have them operational by 2023.
Foxconn’s plans
“Our plans are to begin mass production in the U.S. and Thailand respectively in 2023,” Foxconn Chairman Young Liu told investors in an earnings call. “Other than in the U.S. and Thailand, we are also in talks with possible locations in Europe too as part of our global EV footprint strategy.”
Admittedly, Foxconn’s plans don’t involve an “Apple Car,” but that seems like a possibility. One of the reasons for the new plants is to to shorten development time for automakers, especially electric vehicle newcomers, to turn out cars, according to Nikkei Asia.
About the Apple Car
The status of an Apple auto is unclear. On June 2, Bloomberg reported that Apple has lost “several” top managers from its “Apple Car” project. Here’s what the report says: Apple Inc. has lost multiple top managers of its self-driving car team in recent months, a sign of attrition at the division involved in what could become an important future product.
If an Apple Car ever arrives, it probably won’t arrive until 2024 at the earliest. In fact, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo doesn’t expect it until at least 2025.
