One in three smartphones will be GenAI capable in 2025 with Apple and Samsung dominating the market, according to new data from Counterpoint Research.
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that can generate new content, such as text, images, music, audio, and videos. GenAI models are trained on large amounts of data, and then use that data to learn patterns and structures that they can use to create new content.
Counterpoint says that North America, Western Europe and China will lead the initial shipments of GenAI smartphones. Smartphone brands positioned GenAI as a key differentiator through 2024 and this trend is likely to continue, notes the research group.
Counterpoint says that Apple and Samsung are forecast to dominate the GenAI smartphone market in the early years, leveraging their strong presence in the premium segment and developed markets. Their leadership stems from deep ecosystem integration, seamless hardware-software optimization, and a loyal high-end consumer base, notes the research group.
Both brands are actively investing in GenAI with Apple Intelligence and Galaxy AI. Counterpoint says they’ll continue expanding their AI capabilities through regular OS updates and a phased rollout of new use cases throughout 2025.
