Two individuals who conned Apple into replacing fake faulty iPhones with real ones, have been sentenced to years in prison.Apple Georgetown was one of the stores targeted by the scamAlmost five years after they were arrested in December 2019, Maryland residents Haotian Sun and Pengfei Xue, have been sentenced to 57 months and 54 months jail time respectively. The sentence follows their grand jury conviction in February 2024, where their scheme was detailed over more than three days of testimony.According to Justice.gov, between May 2017 and September 2019, the pair and other unnamed conspirators repeatedly defrauded Apple. In each of more than 6,000 cases, fake iPhones would be received from Hong Kong, and then sent on to various UPS mailboxes in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. These surprises could be in store for Apple’s October Mac announcements
Macworld According to reports, Apple will release new Macs at an event sometime this month. The rumors about these new Macs have been consistent: Apple will likely release M4 MacBook Pros, an M4 iMac, and a redesigned M4 Mac mini. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is the main source reporting about the upcoming event, and he has a reliable track record–it’s so good that he has historically been spot-on with what is eventually released, down to the specifications of the products. Which can set up Apple followers for a bit of a letdown once the event comes and goes–we already know what will be revealed. But there’s always a chance that the rumors miss out on something and that always ends up being the surprise and delight of the event. What surprises could happen at the upcoming Mac event? Here are a few ideas. (Or, considering the context of what I just wrote, here are some “spoilers.”) A bigger iMac Several reports indicate that a 32-inch iMac is in the works, but Gurman reported in August that it is “unclear if that will be an M4 product or something that comes the following year or later.” Mac hardware rumors catch on because of reports about parts that can be tracked in the supply chain, so in the case of a big iMac, you’d think we’d heard a lot about Apple buying a ton of 32-inch panels. But we haven’t heard much. Apple could revive the iMac Pro as a bigger, faster companion to the current iMac. A 32-inch iMac with an M4 or M4 Pro (following the model of the Mac mini) would complement the 24-inch iMac Apple currently offers and inject some excitement into the lineup again. A new Apple display Since Apple is going to release a new Mac mini, this is a good opportunity to release a new display, too. The Studio Display is over two years old, which isn’t outdated in terms of how Apple handles its display lineup; Apple has historically kept displays in the lineup for two or three years before replacing them with something new. But Apple could update the Studio Display and promote it as an ideal display for the new Mac mini. The Pro Display XDR, however, is almost five years old and for a display that costs $5,999, you’re paying a severely high price for outdated tech. An upgrade with ProMotion and proper HDR is a no-brainer, but this doesn’t seem like the event to release a new pro display, though. It’s a better fit for a new Mac Studio, which is expected to be released at WWDC next year. Lightning strikes on the Magic Mouse, Trackpad, Keyboard Much was made when Apple transitioned the AirPods, iPhone, and iPad from Lightning to USB-C. Apple has switched those products successfully, but Apple still uses Lightning in the Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard. Gurman reported before last year’s “Scary Fast” event that these devices would be outfitted with USB-C, but that didn’t happen. After all, the switch to USB-C seems inevitable, so Apple deciding to keep using Lighting would be out of line with the current trend and an unexpected move. MacBook Pro with a display update Apple is using displays based on OLED technology in its iPad Pro and iPhones, and it’s been rumored that it will replace the mini LED display in the MacBook Pro. The iPad Pro 4 uses a Tandem OLED (which it refers to as “Ultra Retina XDR”) and it looks great. Some reports say that the MacBook Pro switch to OLED isn’t scheduled to happen for a while, but Apple has been known to surprise us before with new tech we weren’t expecting. Event? What event? What would be a huge surprise is if Apple didn’t hold an M4 Mac event and simply posted press releases in its Newsroom to announce the releases. It’s not totally out of the realm of possibility, since the M4 upgrade isn’t especially remarkable over the M3, and a demo of the Mac mini’s new design won’t take much time. However, in case you haven’t heard, AI is all the rage in the tech world and Apple puts considerable effort into promoting its Apple Intelligence feature set. It’s not as though the M4 does anything special with Apple Intelligence, which runs on any M-series Mac (as well as Intel Macs with a T2 chip). But Apple will use this event to promote Apple Intelligence, and it will be a big part of the show.

iPhone SE 4: Everything you need to know about Apple’s next budget phone
Macworld Apple updated its entry-level iPhone in March 2022, adding a few nips and tucks here and there along with a quiet price increase. It kept the Home button and small form factor that appeals to some, but the aging design and minimal upgrades meant the new iPhone SE was coolly received by the masses, with many looking forward to the next generation and reviewers hoping Apple was planning a more radical overhaul of the device. Rumors are now starting to appear about what that might look like. In this article we’ve gathered together everything we know so far, and what we can reasonably speculate, about the iPhone SE 4. For information about the iPhone 16 series – read our separate article about the iPhone 16 and our separate article about rumors about the iPhone 17. iPhone SE 4 release date: When will the iPhone SE 4 be released? Spring 2025 (estimated) Apple’s iPhone SE doesn’t follow the same predictable annual release schedule as the standard iPhone line, and the intervals between updates can be harder to predict. The timing of the next launch points to a biennial routine, but that followed a far longer gap between the first and second phones. Here’s when the three models released so far made their debut: iPhone SE (3rd gen): March 2022 iPhone SE (2nd gen): April 2020 iPhone SE (1st gen): March 2016 Analyst Jeff Pu thinks that the iPhone SE will arrive in 2025. Since the SE models typically launch in the spring, it seems obvious that we’re looking at a spring 2025 release date (or later). Furthermore, Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted that Apple was using a prototype iPhone SE to test its 5G modem, which will arrive in the iPhone SE before the flagship iPhone models. Kuo states that “there are no plans for mass production and sales” of this prototype iPhone SE and has reported that the next iPhone SE isn’t expected until 2025. Pricing has steadily increased across the three existing generations, no doubt influenced by the global cost of components and distribution. While the iPhone SE (3rd generation) was released around the same price as the model it replaced, Apple added a chunk onto the cost, making the current model somewhat less desirable than previous iterations, especially when you factor in the measly amount of storage that comes with the baseline model. At launch the prices were even higher in the U.K. but, in September 2023, after adjusting for inflation, Apple dropped the price back to match the U.S. price. Apple did the same thing for prices in Euros in September 2024. Here’s how they line up: iPhone SE (3rd gen, 2022): 64GB: $429/£429 (was £449 at launch) 128GB: $479/£479 (was £499 at launch) 256GB: $579/£579 (was £609 at launch) iPhone SE (2nd gen, 2020): 64GB: $399/£419 128GB: $449/£469 256GB: $549/£569 iPhone SE (1st gen, 2016): 32GB: $399/£379 128GB: $499/£449 However, the iPhone SE needs to be inexpensive, and we’d be surprised to see the price increase too much with the next generation, even with several rumored upgrades. The latest rumors claim the 4th-gen iPhone SE could start at $499, still far less expensive than any other new iPhone Apple sells. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims the next model is intended to help Apple compete with low-end Android phones in China, so a low price would be necessary to achieve this plan. iPhone 4 SE design: What will the next iPhone SE look like? Will the iPhone SE get a long-overdue design revamp? Rumors suggest that we could see a move away from the iPhone 8 chassis to something more like the iPhone 14, or even the iPhone 16. The big difference will be good or bad news depending on your viewpoint. It seems likely that the Home button will be no more. Some people prefer the Home button as a means to interact with their iPhone, for some older people and those who are less dexterous it is helpful to have a physical button. If the iPhone SE has an action button this could take on the role of the Home button for those who require it. No Home button is likely to mean a notch – and that’s a notch, rather than the Dynamic Island. So perhaps the iPhone 14 will lend its shell to the new iPhone SE. Over the years there has been a lot of speculation as to which older iPhone could lend its chassis to the next-generation iPhone SE. Apple can lower production costs by not straying too far from an existing chassis. iPhone 13 mini? As the iPhone SE has always traditionally been one of the smallest devices Apple offers, it seems logical that the discounted iPhone 13 mini format might make its way down to replace the iPhone 6 chassis on the SE. iPhone XR? On an August 2022 episode of the Geared Up podcast, tech tipster Jon Prosser said the “iPhone SE 4… is just the iPhone XR,” meaning it has an “all-screen” design and a 6.1-inch display. However, a report by Ross Young in late October 2022 claimed that Apple is mulling a 5.7-inch display, which would be a new size for an iPhone. The iPhone 13 mini is 5.4 inches and the iPhone X and XS were 5.8 inches. Young also says that Apple is deciding whether to use LCD or OLED for the display. iPhone 14? In February 2023, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple is moving forward with a 6.1-inch OLED display for the iPhone SE 4 with an overall design and features similar to the iPhone 14. Another rumor in April 2024, suggest that the body will resemble an iPhone 14, with a 6.1-inch OLED and notch. The rumored dimensions of the iPhone SE 4 state that it could be about the same size as the iPhone 15 but a smidge taller. iPhone 16? Finally, a rumor in July 2024 suggested Apple will change course with the iPhone SE 4 and instead use the same body as the iPhone 16, making it a true budget version of the latest iPhone lineup. If Apple chooses to use the chassis of the iPhone 16 rather than the iPhone 14 that could allow the best alignment of two camera lenses for talking videos for the Vision Pro. But that would mean that the iPhone SE would have two cameras on the back, rather than just one, as it does currently. iPhone SE 4 specs: Will Apple Intelligence be supported? Now that iOS 18 is here, Apple is preparing its devices for Apple Intelligence AI features which will arrive with iOS 18.1 in the fall. Not all devices currently sold are compatible. The iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are the only iPhones that currently support those features. That means that the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, and the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus do not support Apple Intelligence. Processor & RAM: To run Apple Intelligence an iPhone requires an A17 or A18 chip and 8GB of RAM. There is some expectation that the iPhone SE 4 could meet these requirements. But that would be a strange choice on Apple’s part as it would make both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 redundant. But it would be strange to launch a new product that didn’t support Apple Intelligence at this point in time. Alternatively, the iPhone SE 4 could take the place of the iPhone 14 in the lineup with the same A15 chip. It all depends on where Apple sees the iPhone SE in the range and what its purpose is. Other than the processor and RAM requirements, we may see some other internal changes including the following: Modem: The iPhone SE 4 might be the first iPhone to feature one of Apple’s own 5G modems. In February 2023 analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expected it to be and claimed the baseband chip will be manufactured with a 4nm process and support only sub-6GHz bands. In April 2023, MacRumors reported that analyst Jeff Pu believes that Apple will release a fourth-generation iPhone SE with an Apple-designed 5G modem in 2025. TSMC will manufacture the modem chip. However, Pu doesn’t have a track record for accuracy like other analysts. In April 2023, Kuo tweeted that the iPhone SE 4 is dead (again) and that Apple is using an engineering prototype iPhone SE to test its 5G modem. Storage: With the iPhone 13 range moving to a baseline of 128GB (and the 14-series handsets following suit), it’s hoped that the new iPhone SE might do likewise, as 64GB isn’t enough for most people anymore, especially since system files take up more than 10GB. But we’re not terribly hopeful—the iPhone SE (3rd gen) launched after the iPhone 13 range and still started with the same 64GB of storage, and the redesigned 10th-generation iPad also starts at 64GB. We explain more about this in why you shouldn’t buy the 64GB iPhone SE. USB C: We expect the iPhone SE 4 to feature a USB-C port for charging, as all new iPhones do, and IP68 water resistance. The current SE is one of the last remaining Apple devices to still have a Lightning port. Camera(s): One of the defining features of the iPhone SE is a single camera on the back. This is probably not going to change, although if the new iPhone SE does adopt the chassis of an iPhone 14 or 16 it is possible. Regardless, we expect a similar 12MP wide-angle lens, despite the move to 48MP main camera on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. The selfie camera is also expected to be 12MP. iPhone SE 4: Will the new iPhone SE use Touch ID or Face ID? The most recent rumors say the new iPhone SE will have Face ID with a notch (not dynamic island), similar to an iPhone 13 or iPhone 14. That means Touch ID, which has been a staple of the SE line since its debut, will go away. iPhone history The iPhone 16 range and the iPhone SE 3 are the current-generation models available from Apple. These three pieces of old Apple tech have overstayed their welcome
Macworld Apple has a reputation as an uncompromising driver of new technology. Look no further than the classic example of shipping the original iMac without a floppy drive or legacy ports, or designing the iPhone without a hardware keyboard, or even killing off the iPod mini to make way for the iPod nano. The company certainly puts forth an image of pushing technology forward without dwelling on the past. While those examples might get a lot of attention, the Apple of these days is a bigger, more ponderous organization, a battleship that can’t simply turn on a dime. As a result, the move to any new technology takes time, and often what came before isn’t excised in months, or sometimes even years. As much as Apple might like to see itself as an unstoppable force barreling ever forward, you don’t have to look too far through its lineup to see plenty of places where it’s still clinging to the past, even if it’s out of sheer practicality. You can’t go Home button again One of the original trademarks of the iPhone was its single front-facing button. The Home button evolved, gaining a Touch ID sensor and eventually transforming from a physical button into a capacitive sensor with haptics. But its demise was heralded by the introduction of the iPhone X design with its edge-to-edge display and Face ID. The iPhone SE is the last iPhone with a Home button. And while the Home button has been gradually removed from both the iPhone and iPad lines, it lives on even to this day. The third-generation iPhone SE, which came out in 2022, remains a product in Apple’s lineup, proudly sporting the classic design ushered in by 2016’s iPhone 7. That said, the Home button’s days seem to be numbered. Rumor has it that a fourth-generation of the low-cost phone will show up next spring, finally bringing it into line with the modern iPhone design. The Home button will shuffle off this mortal coil after almost eighteen years. There’s a curve describing the practicalities of this kind of design: as Apple produces more of a certain design, doing so gets cheaper—but eventually as it scales up its new models, that old design becomes the outlier, meaning it’s now more expensive to keep around, especially for just a single model. So in the end, Apple saves money and effort by shifting the SE’s design to look like the rest of the phones and bidding adieu to the iconic Home button. Lightning bolts When Apple introduced the Lightning connector in 2012, the response would have had you thinking they’d methodically kicked every single one of their customer’s dogs. Its predecessor, the 30-pin dock connector had originated on the iPod back in 2003, but that nine-year tenure had seen an explosion of accessories that relied on it–to think, people who’ve only started using an iPhone in the last decade may have never even seen the once-ubiquitous alarm clock/speaker with a dock-connector built in. But perhaps the fact that USB-C had already been on Macs since 2015 and was introduced into the iPad lineup in 2018 helped soften the blow. Plus, in the intervening years the prevalence of wireless technologies, including Bluetooth speakers and Qi charging, made switching out the physical connector less of an issue. Still, Lightning has not yet been excised from Apple’s products either. In addition to the older iPhones that Apple still sells (the iPhone 14 line, the aforementioned iPhone SE), the Lightning port is still used for charging by Apple’s wireless Mac input accessories: the Magic Keyboard, Trackpad, and Mouse. (Name a more iconic trio, I’ll wait.) And in case that’s not enough for you, it’s also still sneaks in one last place: the first-generation Apple Pencil, which has stuck around for compatibility with all those older iPads out there. Many of those are surely not long for the world. The iPhone SE’s rumored refresh will undoubtedly switch to USB-C and Apple will probably (hopefully?) update its Mac accessories in the not too distant future—perhaps when a new Mac mini shows up? But that Apple Pencil, well, it may be a few years yet before it’s finally erased. Quid pro status quo Stand back, because I’m going to dish the hottest of takes and add to this list of legacy technology hanging on by a thread an entire Apple product: the Mac Pro. But even many of the people who today might want a Mac Pro frankly don’t stand to get a lot out of it–or not appreciably more than they could get from a similar specced Mac Studio. Though the Mac Pro might still be the most expandable in Apple’s lineup, that’s in large part due to the incorporation of internal PCI slots that some users might need. But they may be of limited use based on a dearth of available compatible hardware. I say all of this not to argue that the Mac Pro should disappear, but simply to point out that it is the longest of long tails, a category of product that dates back decades and may never fully disappear, but still fundamentally represents the way computers used to be. For a company that prides itself on relentlessly pushing forward, Apple still can’t quite seem to let go of the past.

Macworld The Photos app lets you create shared albums that other people can contribute to. The process involves a few steps, but it’s not difficult. You can start by figuring out which images and videos you want to share, or you can create the album and then add to it. With a selection of media, click or tap the Share icon. Choose Shared Album (macOS) or Add to Shared Album (iOS/iPadOS). Click New Shared Album (macOS) or tap Shared Album > New Shared Album. Name the album, click or tap the plus (+) icon to invite people, and optionally leave a comment explaining the album. You can bypass inviting people; you can always modify members later. Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming watchOS 11.1 update to developers for testing purposes. The second beta comes a week after Apple released the first watchOS 11.1 beta alongside iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 betas. To install the ‌‌watchOS 11‌.1 update, developers need to open the Apple Watch app, go to the Software Update section under "General" in Settings, and toggle on the ‌‌watchOS 11‌‌ Developer Beta. An Apple ID linked to a developer account is required. Once beta updates have been activated, ‌‌watchOS 11‌‌.1 can be downloaded under the same Software Update section. To install software, an Apple Watch needs to have 50 percent battery life and it must be placed on an Apple Watch charger. Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming visionOS 2.1 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new software coming a week after Apple seeded the first visionOS 2.1 beta. Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming tvOS 18.1 beta to developers for testing purposes, with the new software coming a week after Apple seeded the first tvOS 18.1 beta. Registered developers are able to download the tvOS 18.1 update by opting in to the beta through the Settings app on the Apple TV. A registered developer account is required. tvOS software releases are usually minor in scale compared to other operating system updates, focusing primarily on smaller improvements rather than outward-facing changes. We don't know what's included in tvOS 18.1 Apple shares some information on tvOS releases in its tvOS support document, which is updated after each tvOS launch, but Apple does not provide notes during beta testing. Over the weekend, well-known repair website iFixit shared an iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus teardown video, and an accompanying blog post. Notably, the video shows Apple's new electrical battery removal process in action on the standard iPhone 16. iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus batteries have an innovative type of adhesive that can be easily loosened with low-voltage electrical current, such as from a 9V battery. The steps involved include attaching alligator clips to a 9V battery, connecting the red/positive clip to the silver tab on the iPhone's battery, and connecting the black/negative clip to the lower-right grounding screw on the iPhone's bottom speaker module. After up to 90 seconds, the adhesive should debond and the battery can then be easily taken out of the iPhone. iFixit described this new process as "revolutionary," and explained how it works: Imagine an Oreo cookie with a thick layer of double-stuf creme. You figured out that if you dip just the bottom cookie in some milk and twist the cookie apart, the filling will always stick to the top cookie. Similarly, when we zap the adhesive, the current oxidizes the negative/anode mating surface and loosens the adhesive from it. The adhesive "filling" between the battery and the frame will then stick to whichever surface that’s connected to the positive terminal. In an email, iFixit said the iPhone 16 is "the most-repairable iPhone yet":We're giving the phone a laudable 7 out of 10 repairability score (provisional, pending Apple's release of parts). In iOS 17, Apple doesn't offer a system-level method for individually locking sensitive apps like Photos behind Face ID. There is a Shortcut action that provides rudimentary protection, but it's not infallible. Thankfully, iOS 18 includes a dedicated option to lock and even hide individual apps even when the iPhone itself is already unlocked. This is useful because it means you can unlock your iPhone and hand it to someone for them to look at something, knowing they won't be able to open the apps you have locked. If someone using your iPhone tries to open an app that you have manually locked using the method described below, they will see a popup informing them that it can't be accessed without secondary authentication via Face ID (or Touch ID on the iPhone SE). Notably, if Stolen Device Protection is active, entering a passcode to unlock an app is not an option, so even if your iPhone is stolen and the thief knows your passcode, they still won't be able to open the app. However, if Stolen Device Protection is not enabled, a passcode prompt appears that can be used to unlock the app after three failed Face ID attempts. It's worth noting that not all apps can be locked. Apple does not provide the lock option for apps like Maps, Clock, Calculator, and Settings. Otherwise, almost every other app can be locked, including third-party apps. Here's how it's done. On your Home Screen, press and hold on the icon for the app that you want to lock. Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID). Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID) to confirm. Note that you can't use Siri with a locked app, and Spotlight search and any notification previews will not show content from the app. How to Lock and Hide Apps When you lock a third-party app using the above method, you have the option to hide it as well – but you cannot hide system apps like Safari or Photos. When enabled, the app icon and name is removed from the Home Screen, and it will not show up in searches, although it may still appear in the Settings app. An obscured folder for hidden apps is also created in your App Library, which is accessed by swiping left to the end of your Home Screen pages. However, you will not get app notifications or incoming calls from a hidden third-party app. How to Unlock and Unhide Apps To unlock an app that you previously locked, simply long press on the app's icon and choose the "Don't Require Face ID" option. As long as you have Stolen Device Protection enabled, turning the lock on and off requires a ‌Face ID‌ scan, so it can't be turned off without your knowledge. To unhide a locked third-party app, swipe through to the App Library and tap the obscured Hidden folder at the bottom. You will be required to perform a Face ID scan to reveal its contents. After that, you can access any hidden apps contained within it. iPhone 17 Air: Everything We Know About Apple's Slim iPhone
In 2025, Apple is expected to discontinue the iPhone "Plus" device in its iPhone 17 lineup to make way for an iPhone "Air" – although it may not actually be called this when the device debuts in the fall of next year. Even though the iPhone 16 series has only just launched, when you consider that we learned about larger displays on the iPhone 16 Pro models way back in May 2023, rumors about a two-generations-away iPhone isn't all that unusual so far ahead of time. While we continue to acclimatize to the new iPhone 16 series, here's a compilation of everything we have heard from reputable sources so far about Apple's so-called iPhone 17 "Air." iPhone 17 Air: Rumors So Far About the Name Apple's rumored slimmer iPhone 17, previously referred to as the iPhone 17 "Slim," could be positioned as an iPhone "Air" to boost sales, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. There has been uncertainty in recent months about the intention of the so-called ‌iPhone 17‌ "Slim" and its rumored position in the lineup. YouTuber Jon Prosser was first to suggest that the device could be positioned as an "‌iPhone‌ Air." Now, Gurman seems to support this idea. Replacing the iPhone "Plus," which, like the "mini" models before it, has not sold well, the ‌iPhone 17‌ "Air" will represent a new approach to the fourth model in Apple's iPhone lineup, offering a device with a substantially thinner design that sits between the ‌iPhone 17‌ and ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro. Gurman has compared the device to the original MacBook Air from 2008, which sat between the regular MacBook and MacBook Pro in the lineup. Thinner Design According to The Information, Apple's all-new iPhone 17 model next year will have a "significantly thinner" design with an aluminum chassis, rather than a titanium casing like Apple's Pro models. The news outlet also claims that the device will feature a narrower Dynamic Island (potentially due to Apple's adoption of a smaller "metalens" for the Face ID system) although this specific claim has since been contested. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the handset to have a titanium frame, but with a lower percentage of titanium than used for the iPhone 15 Pro models. Internally code-named D23, the device's redesign has been described as a major one equivalent to the iPhone X. Smaller Display The first details about the size of the device's display arrived courtesy of Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu, who said it would be 6.6 inches. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has since corroborated Pu's claim. However, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young, it will feature a 6.55-inch display. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch display. Apple is still said to be testing different designs for the slimmer phone, so the display size could always change between now and the device's launch. ProMotion Support Apple intends to expand ProMotion to the entire lineup in 2025, including the iPhone 17 "Air," allowing all iPhone 17 models to ramp up to a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and video content when necessary. Previously, only "Pro" models in Apple's iPhone lineup have supported ProMotion. Notably, ProMotion would also enable the display on the iPhone 17 "Air" to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that can show the Lock Screen's clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper even when the device is locked. Relocated Cameras The Information claimed that the iPhone 17 "Slim" or "Air" will have cameras in locations we haven't seen before on an iPhone. According to a May report, the rear cameras could be moved to the "top center" of the device. Some Android phones like Google's Pixel 8 Pro have rear cameras in a top-center position, but Apple's iPhone camera system has occupied the top-left corner ever since the 2007 model. To add to the intrigue, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that the device will have only one camera, as opposed to two or three. Anti-Reflective Coating All iPhone 17 models will feature an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than Apple's Ceramic Shield found on iPhone 15 models, according to Chinese Weibo leaker Instant Digital. The outer glass on the iPhone 17 series is said to have a "super-hard anti-reflective layer" that is "more scratch-resistant." It's not clear whether Apple is planning to adopt the Gorilla Glass Armor that Samsung uses in its Galaxy S24 Ultra, but the description of Corning's latest technology matches the rumor. ProMotion Technology According to The Elec, all iPhone 17 models will feature OLED displays with low-power backplane technology, bringing ProMotion to Apple's non-Pro iPhone models for the first time. ProMotion allows the display to ramp up to a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and video content when required. ProMotion also allows the display to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate as low as 1Hz, which is why the iPhone 16 Pro screens feature an always-on capability that shows the Lock Screen's clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper even when the device is locked. Improved Selfie Camera According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the entire iPhone 17 lineup will feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera with a six-element lens. The iPhone 14 and 15 feature a 12-megapixel front-facing camera with five plastic lens elements, and this year's iPhone 16 lineup features the same hardware. The upgraded resolution on the iPhone 17 will allow photos to maintain their quality even when cropped or zoomed in, while the larger number of pixels will capture finer details. The upgrade to a six-element lens should also slightly enhance image quality. Internal Upgrades Haitong analyst Jeff Pu claims the iPhone 17 "Slim" or "Air" will feature 8GB of RAM, compared to 6GB of RAM on the iPhone 15 Plus. It's worth noting that all iPhone 16 models are fitted with 8GB of RAM – a hardware requirement of on-device Apple Intelligence. According to The Information, the device will also be equipped with Apple's A19 chip, which is likely to be based on an optimized version of TSMC's 3nm process, possibly N3P or N3X. The device may also be one of the first to use an Apple-made 5G modem. Higher Price The Information reported that the slimmer iPhone 17 could have a higher price tag than the Pro Max model, which currently starts at $1,199, despite suggestions that it will not be as feature-rich as Apple's top-tier Max. The cool factor of a completely new thinner design is expected to entice customers nonetheless. Gurman believes that the design of the ‌iPhone 17‌ "Air" will "just be a step toward something better" since Apple will eventually want to "squeeze the power of a Pro model into this smaller design." iOS 18 was released to the public earlier this month, but the first Apple Intelligence features will not be available until iOS 18.1 is released in October. Apple Intelligence features will continue to roll out in iOS 18.2 and beyond, with the expected roadmap outlined below per Apple's website and rumors. Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro model or any iPhone 16 model, and it will initially require device and Siri language being set to U.S. English. iOS 18.1 Here are some of the key Apple Intelligence features in the iOS 18.1 beta so far: A few Siri enhancements, including improved understanding for both follow-up requests and when you stumble over your words Writing tools for rewriting, summarizing, and proofreading text Notification summaries for Messages, Mail, and many other apps Suggested replies in the Messages and Mail apps A new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can remove unwanted people or objects from photos and use generative AI to fill in the background The ability to create a Memories movie in the Photos app by typing a description Phone call recording and transcription A new Focus mode called Reduce Interruptions that surfaces important notifications only Article summaries when using Reader Mode in the Safari app See our full list of Apple Intelligence features included in the iOS 18.1 beta for even more. iOS 18.2 Apple has been internally testing iOS 18.2 for at least a few months now, based on evidence of the software version in our website's analytics logs. iOS 18.2 will likely be released in December, as that is when Apple said that it will be making Apple Intelligence available in localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. Similar updates like iOS 17.2 and iOS 16.2 were released in Decembers. Apple Intelligence in More Countries As mentioned, iOS 18.2 will likely expand Apple Intelligence to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. for the first time. Image Playground and Genmoji Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said two more Apple Intelligence features that were previewed earlier this year will be added in iOS 18.2, including Image Playground for generating images and Genmoji for generating custom emoji. Here is how Apple describes Image Playground:Produce fun, original images in seconds with the Image Playground experience right in your apps. Create an entirely new image based on a description, suggested concepts, and even a person from your Photos library. You can easily adjust the style and make changes to match a Messages thread, your Freeform board, or a slide in Keynote. ChatGPT Integration With Siri Apple said that ChatGPT will be available through Siri before the end of the year, so this integration will likely go live with iOS 18.2. With user permission, Siri will be able to show ChatGPT answers directly in response to questions and other prompts. ChatGPT will also be an option for Apple's system-wide Writing Tools feature, allowing users to generate text and images. Apple said ChatGPT will be powered by OpenAI's latest GPT-4o model on its platforms. iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will be able to use ChatGPT for free, without creating an account, and ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to connect their accounts to access paid features on these devices. Apple said OpenAI will not store ChatGPT requests made from its devices, and it said users' IP addresses will be obscured. iOS 18.3 iOS 18.3 is likely to be a minor update released shortly after the U.S. holiday season. It is unclear if this version will add any new Apple Intelligence features. Update: In his Power On newsletter on September 22, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said some of Apple Intelligence's new Siri features are "in consideration" for iOS 18.3: The biggest iOS 18 update after iOS 18.1 will be iOS 18.4, which will include many of the new Siri features (some are in consideration for iOS 18.3, I'm told). iOS 18.4 Siri: Personal Context, On-Screen Awareness, and Deeper Per-App Controls Bloomberg's Mark Gurman on Thursday reiterated that Siri's ability to provide more personalized and contextual responses will not be available until March. This timeframe suggests these languages will be added in iOS 18.4.
