How to run Windows on Mac | Macworld
How to run Windows on Mac
Macworld Mac users who want to run Windows on their Macs have been able to do so since the arrival of the Intel processors in Macs back in 2006. Back then it was easy to use Apple’s own Boot Camp software to boot a Mac up into Windows, at which point your Mac could run Windows apps as if it was a PC (more or less). Additionally, solutions like Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion allowed Macs to run Windows and Windows apps side-by-side with the macOS and Mac apps. However, in 2020 Apple started to transition from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon processors. Now every Mac Apple sells uses one of its own M-series processors, which provide much better performance than the old Intel processors. Apple’s new processors are based on ARM technology, rather than Intel’s X-86 architecture though, and, as a result, these new Macs can’t use Boot Camp to run Windows. They can still install Windows using virtualization technology, however. While Apple no longer offers its own solution for those wanting to run Windows on a Mac, Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion and other third-party solutions do allow Windows to be installed on a Mac. Most of these solutions use virtualization technology to create a virtual machine – or VM – that can run Windows and Windows software on a Mac. A virtual machine is an ordinary Mac app, but it mimics – or emulates – the way that a Windows PC works, allowing you to run your Windows apps on the Mac desktop just like any other Mac app. We have tested a number of such options in our round-up of the Best Virtual Machine Software for Mac. Boot Camp is still an option if you have a Mac with an Intel processor. Read article on How To Install Windows On A Mac With An Intel Processor for help. What you need to run Windows on an M-series Mac If you want to run Windows within a virtual machine on your Mac you need a fairly powerful Mac, with plenty of memory and storage space available. This is because you need to allocate some of your Mac’s memory, storage space, and processor power to the virtual machine in order to install Windows and run your Windows apps properly. You probably won’t be able to play the latest 3D games on your Mac using a Windows virtual machine, but you should be able to run many productivity apps, such as Microsoft Office, as well as quite a few design and graphics apps that may not be available on the Mac. There is, however, one other complicating factor that you may have to face when trying to create a Windows virtual machine on an Apple Silicon-powered Mac. You can’t install the standard version of Windows on a virtual machine if your Mac has an Apple Silicon processor* because that version of Windows is written for Intel processors. You need an ARM version of Windows. (*Strictly speaking, this is technically possible, but it’s very difficult and you won’t get very good performance). How to get Windows for Apple Silicon Macs Apple’s M-series of processors are known as Arm processors because they are based on designs licensed from a U.K. company called Arm Ltd. There are other companies that make Arm processors as well, such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips, which are starting to appear in some of the latest Windows laptops. In order to make Windows work on these Arm processors, Microsoft has developed an alternative version of Windows known as Windows On Arm. Parallels Desktop for Mac Read our review Price When Reviewed: Standard – £89.99 annual subscription or £104.99 perpetual license; Pro – £99.99 annual subscription; Business – £119.99 annual subscription Best Prices Today: $99.99 at Parallels (Subscription) | $129.99 at Parallels (Perpetual License) If your Mac has an Apple Silicon processor then you won’t be able to create a virtual machine using the Intel version of Windows, but you can use Windows on Arm instead. The only problem here is that it’s actually a little tricky to get hold of Windows on Arm, as Microsoft doesn’t sell it direct to consumers and generally only licenses it to PC manufacturers such as HP, Lenovo or Dell. Fortunately, the team behind Parallels Desktop has been working closely with Microsoft, and has been approved by Microsoft as an official solution for running Windows on Macs with Apple Silicon. Parallels Desktop, which was recently updated to version 20, allows you to download and install Windows 11 On Arm directly from Microsoft when you create a new virtual machine. You can then purchase a license for your copy of Windows from the Microsoft Store running within your virtual machine. That option isn’t currently available with rivals such as VMware Fusion, so we’ll focus on Parallels Desktop to show how this is done. Read our review of Parallels Fusion. How to run Windows on a Mac (M-series and later) Foundry Foundry Foundry 1. Download Windows on Arm Screenshot Foundry As soon as you launch Parallels Desktop on a Mac that has Apple Silicon, the app provides some useful information about running Windows on Apple Silicon in order to help you get started. It then asks if you want to download and install a copy of Windows 11 On Arm (as the Intel version of Windows won’t run on Macs with Apple Silicon). Unfortunately, this option to download Windows On Arm isn’t currently available within rival virtualization programs, such as VMWare Fusion. When you run your new virtual machine for the first time it will give you the option of purchasing Windows 11 On Arm from the Microsoft Store. If you’ve already got a license for Windows 11 then you may be able to use that here, or you can buy a new license from within Parallels Desktop. 2. Configure your Virtual Machine Foundry Once you’ve downloaded Windows, you can create and configure your new virtual machine. You can choose how many of your Mac’s processor cores to devote to running the VM – which is a key factor that will determine how fast the VM runs. You can also specify how much memory and storage space are allocated to the VM too. There are lots of other settings, such as the ability to control the way Windows apps appear on the Mac desktop, or how Windows and Mac apps can share files. Fortunately, Parallels provides standard settings that generally work well, and you can then experiment and fine-tune your VM as you get used to working with it. 3. Run Windows on your Mac Foundry Here’s our Windows VM running on an iMac with a modest M1 processor. As you can see here, the VM starts off running in its own window, showing the standard Windows desktop. However, Parallels Desktop also provides a Coherence mode that hides this window and just shows your Windows apps floating on the main Mac desktop, just like ordinary Mac apps. You can adjust the viewing mode and other settings using the Parallels pulldown menu in the main Menu bar.

And further RAM increases could be on the cards as Apple Intelligence evolves, if the latest report about a future iPhone is any indication. According to a report on Weibo by “Mobile phone chip expert,” the iPhone 18 will feature a new A20 chip that includes 12GB of RAM: The 2nm processor A20 of the 2026 Apple iPhone will adopt a new packaging method. APTS has been changed from the original InFo to the WMCM packaging method. Memory will also be upgraded to 12GB, and the whole network will be announced 2 years in advance. The person behind “Mobile chip expert” states in their Weibo profile that they have 25 years in the integrated chip industry. That person has also made accurate predictions in the past. “Mobile chip expert” also reported in August that the iPhone 17 will have 12GB of RAM, a reported echoed by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. While Apple Intelligence isn’t officially available yet, it’s already had an effect on the company’s products. For the feature to work the way Apple wants it to work, the iPhone, iPad, and Mac need more RAM, a component the company has been stingy with historically. But with the new iPhone 16, Apple increased the amount of RAM in the device, and is rumored to do the same with the upcoming base M4 MacBook Pro. AI features like Apple Intelligence are processor-intensive, so having enough RAM is important for an optimal experience. As Apple Intelligence evolves, it could become more demanding of the processor, which could explain why Apple is set to increase RAM in future devices. The report also mentions that the A20 chip in the iPhone 18 will be manufactured using an enhanced 2nm process. This falls in line with a report from the beginning of this year that said that Apple was looking into the 2nm process for its iPhone 17 in 2025. The nanometer process refers to the production of the chip, and 2nm allows for increased transistor density over the current 3nm used for the A18 and A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro respectively. The higher the transistor density, the better the performance and power efficiency. The enhanced 2nm process for the A20 chip in 2026 would introduce improvements from the standard 2nm process.

Apple finally announces a new iPad mini and not much is new
Macworld After three long years (and one long month) of waiting, Apple has finally unveiled the 7th-gen iPad mini. It did so today in a press release rather than holding a media event, and the reasons for this diffidence become apparent when you see how much, or rather how little, has changed. The main upgrade is the processor, which has double-jumped from the A15 to the A17 Pro. Thanks to this hardware bump the new iPad mini supports Apple Intelligence—that presumably also means the RAM will increase from 4GB to 8GB, although Apple doesn’t list the RAM specs for anything other than M-series processors. But still, it leaves the mini a long way behind the iPad Air which used to be its larger-screened equivalent and is now two generations into M-class Mac chips. Apple Apple Apple Beyond the processor upgrade, you have to look pretty hard to spot changes from the 2021 model: It supports the newer Apple Pencil Pro (including its hover feature) and drops support for the 2nd-gen Apple Pencil. It starts at 128GB of storage rather than 64GB. Smart HDR 3 has been upgraded to Smart HDR 4. Wi-Fi 6 improves to Wi-Fi 6E. Bluetooth 5.0 is now Bluetooth 5.3. It now comes with an eSIM only, and the nano-SIM slot has been removed. It still comes in space gray, starlight, and purple, but pink has been replaced with blue. And all of the colors are less saturated and vibrant (because who likes vibrant colors, right?) So to sum up, the physical design is unchanged, which means we still get a portrait-orientation FaceTime camera instead of the far superior landscape design. The cameras are all the same, although Smart HDR 4 may mean they perform slightly better in challenging lighting conditions. It hasn’t joined the premium iPads in getting access to the M chip family, or the option to pay for 1TB of storage. It doesn’t get a Smart Connector or its own Magic Keyboard. Apple even used the same wallpaper in marketing images on its website. A minor update, then. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait three years for the next model. The new iPad mini is available to pre-order now and will ship on Wednesday, October 23. It starts at $499/£499.

Here's What the New iPhone 16 Camera Control Button Can Do
The iPhone 16 models that Apple previewed today all feature a new Camera Control button that's located on the right side of the iPhone under the power button. The Camera Control button can be used for a number of different functions when capturing images and video. Apple says that the Camera Control button is meant to work in either landscape or portrait mode, and it was built with a force sensor and touch sensor to support different gestures. Single click - Open up the Camera app (or a third-party app). Single click, Camera open - Take a photo. Click and hold - Open Camera app, start a video recording. Light press - Open up controls like zoom. This button will also lock focus and exposure (coming this fall) for reframing shots without losing focus. Double light press - Bring up the camera preview menu to choose different controls like exposure or depth of field. Swipe - Swap through available adjustment options, and also change parameters like zoom, exposure, or depth of field when a control is selected. The button has deep software support, so you can also swap between control functions without having to go into the Camera app manually. Adjust zoom Adjust exposure Adjust depth of field Swipe through different stylistic options Third-party developers will be able to take advantage of the Camera Control for their apps for adjusting settings, and it will work in social media apps like Snapchat. Later this year, Camera Control will be able to work with a new visual intelligence feature. Apple's Beats brand today announced the launch of new iPhone 16 cases that have MagSafe and Camera Control support. This is the first time that Beats has designed iPhone cases, with the company typically focusing on headphones. The new cases come in four colors that match the standard iPhone 16 colors, including Midnight Black, Summit Stone, Riptide Blue and Sunset Purple. The Beats cases are made from a hard polycarbonate material with flexible sidewalls to optimize shock absorption, along with a soft microfiber lining to keep the ‌iPhone‌ inside safe from scratches. Apple says that the case is thin, light, and easy to grip. On the outside of the case, there is a glossy, scratch-resistant coating that adds extra protection. The ‌iOS 18‌ and ‌iPadOS 18‌ beta track is now separate from the iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 beta track, with the .1 betas adding support for Apple Intelligence on devices that are able to run the features. ‌iOS 18‌ introduces Apple Intelligence, a set of AI features that are built deeply into the operating system. Apple Intelligence won't be coming until later in the beta testing process, but it includes features for refining and editing writing, generating images and emoji, and most notably, improving Siri and search. ‌Siri‌ is gaining a better understanding of natural language, improved contextual awareness, and the personal assistant will integrate with ChatGPT to answer more complex queries. Apple Intelligence features are limited to the iPhone 15 Pro models and iPads with an M-series chip, but there are a number of other features that are coming. Apple is allowing users to rearrange Home screen apps to have open spaces, plus there's a dark mode for app icons and tinting options. The Control Center is customizable and third-party developers can add controls for their apps, with the Lock Screen Flashlight and Camera icons able to be replaced or removed. Messages is gaining Rich Communication Services support to improve conversations with Android users, the option to schedule texts to be sent later, new text effects, messages over satellite when there's no cellular, and the option to use any emoji for Tapback responses. There's a dedicated Passwords app for logins, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes, and there's now an option to lock and hide apps, which means they can't be opened without secondary Face ID or Touch ID authentication even when your phone is unlocked. Safari has a highlights feature that summarizes articles and surfaces key information on websites, the Photos app interface has been overhauled, and there's a new Tap to Cash feature for privately and securely transferring money using Apple Cash. The biggest advances in the latest incarnation of Ricoh’s GR series (http://ww.ricoh.com/r_dc), the 10-megapixel Digital IV (US$599), are in speed and usability.

With regard to speed, the maximum ISO is now 3,200, and the auto modes include an Auto-Hi option that maintains a selected shutter speed and adjusts the ISO. Ricoh adds AF Continuous Shooting that performs best in bright daylight.
