While the update itself is relatively minor, it includes an important security fix related to web browsing.Specifically, iOS 18.3.2 contains a supplementary fix for a WebKit vulnerability that was believed to have been fully patched with iOS 17.2. Macworld While macOS 15.4 is still in beta testing, Apple has released a second small update to macOS 15.3 with an important security fix. The release notes don’t offer any clues as to what the bug fixes are, but Apple’s security update page explains the patch. The issue, which affects the WebKit engine, is a “supplementary fix” for an attack that was previously blocked in iOS 17.2, which was released in December 2023. According to Apple, the flaw may have been exploited in “an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals” using versions prior to iOS 17.2. Apple released macOS Sonoma 14.2, Ventura 13.6.3, and Monterey 12.7.2 alongside iOS 17.2, though it’s unclear which patch this specifically refers to. Apple describes the flaw as an out-of-bounds write issue, which was addressed with improved checks to prevent unauthorized actions. You can update your Mac by heading over to System Settings, and then select General and Software Update. - 07:00 pmiOS 18.3.2 is released with a single critical WebKit fix
Macworld It’s not often that Apple releases an iOS update to address a single security vulnerability—generally, there are at least a few security holes plugged in even a minor iOS point release. It’s even more rare that the security fix in question addresses something that was seemingly already fixed. But that’s exactly the case with iOS 18.3.2 and iPadOS 18.3.2. According to Apple’s security note on this release, the only change in this release is a WebKit update to address an out-of-bounds write issue that allowed some content to break out of the “web sandbox.” The most interesting part is Apple’s note that this was an issue addressed in iOS 17.2 back in December 2023 and needed further attention: This is a supplementary fix for an attack that was blocked in iOS 17.2. (Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 17.2.) So go head over to Settings and update your iPhones, iPads, and Macs. There’s a security vulnerability that wasn’t as tightly fixed as it should have been over a year ago. - 06:56 pmThis is the one security fix added in iOS 18.3.2 and more
