- 05:21 pmApple pulls US-funded Radio Free Europe app from Russia
The Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty news app has been removed from the App Store in Russia, in another case of the state mandating what apps are allowed. The App Store is a powerful digital ecosystem. The move comes less than a month after the Russian authorities had Apple remove Current Time, the independent media service and website run by the same Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) organization. According to RFE/RL, Apple notified the organization of the app's removal following a request by Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor. In that previous case, Roskomnadzor is reported to have told Apple that the app contained "undesirable" material. This time, the regulator is said to have used the same word to describe RFE/RL's overall activities within Russia. Macworld Black Friday, the biggest shopping weekend of the year, is very nearly here and you can expect to get a good deal on a new Mac between November 29 until December 2, 2024. In fact we are already seeing some deals which you can find below! We are tracking every Mac deal we can find to give you the very best view on what’s out there this Black Friday. Whether you’re looking for an iMac, Mac mini, or a Mac Studio, we’ll help you find the best price. At Macworld we monitor deals in the U.S. and U.K. all year long and we basing our recommendations on our extensive knowledge of Apple’s products – new and old. For example, it is important to be aware that Apple recently updated the Mac mini and iMac to the M4 chip (as it did with the MacBook Pro). These updates were much more than just a new chip though, Apple also doubled the RAM allocated as standard from 8GB to 16GB. Additionally, in the U.K. prices fell (though not in the U.S.). As a result the older generation of iMac and Mac mini would have to be considerably reduced in price to compete with the new models. You’ll see how much RAM (aka unified memory) is on offer for the deals below, so you know exactly what you are getting. We also include the price Apple sells Macs for, and the price it used to sell them for in the case of discontinued models. If you are looking for a MacBook deal, read our separate advice in our guide to the best Black Friday MacBook deals. And if you want to know what other Apple products are discounted read Best Black Friday 2024 Apple deals. Does Apple discount Macs for Black Friday? Head below for a roundup of all the non-AI features coming to your iPhone as part of iOS 18.2. more…04:37 pmThe M4 MacBook Pro has a secret display upgrade Apple didn’t tell us about
Macworld I recently mused about how the Mac lineup has been the most compelling for a while, and one of the reasons is that Apple introduced worthwhile features besides the chip upgrade to the M4. For the M4 MacBook Pro, there’s one more feature that Apple hasn’t mentioned at all. According to display expert Ross Young, Apple now uses a quantum dot film in the MacBook Pro’s Liquid Retina XDR display. This QD film replaces a KSF phosphor film (also known as a narrow-band red phosphor) placed between the backlight and the display. The result is that the MacBook Pro’s display creates a more consistent color gamut and “better motion performance.” There are also environmental benefits as Young points out: Big Apple display news, they have adopted quantum dots for the first time. The latest MacBook Pro’s (M4) use a quantum dot (QD) film rather than a red KSF phosphor film. In the past, Apple went with the KSF solution due to better efficiency and lack of cadmium (Cd), but the latest Cd-free QD films are very efficient, feature as good or better color gamut and better motion performance. Ross Young Ross Young (@DSCCRoss) via X, November 14, 2024 QD films are often used on high-end TVs and displays. So why the switch now? Apple hasn’t talked about this so it’s mere speculation, but based on Young’s post, it appears that Apple wasn’t satisfied with QD film’s previous performance. Why didn’t Apple mention this change? Most likely because it’s the kind of under-the-hood change that won’t factor much into a buying decision. But it’s a notable change that shows how Apple continues to improve its high-end devices without raising costs. It’ll be interesting to see if Apple adopts QD film for the M4 MacBook Air, which uses an LED display, instead of the mini-LED display in the MacBook Pro. Reports say that the new Air will be revealed in the spring of 2025 and it’s expected to be nothing more than a chip upgrade.04:30 pmMake it mobile: Set iPad as display for M4 Mac mini [Setups]
