Macworld Apple unveiled new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models Wednesday, as the company continued its week of Air-themed product announcements. The new MacBook Airs aren’t exactly groundbreaking—it’s no surprise Apple didn’t feel it necessary to save these for a blockbuster press event—but their upgrades are quietly worthwhile. They certainly outdo the previous day’s underwhelming iPad Air refresh. Like that new iPad, the new MacBooks are based around a processor upgrade: both models now run an M4 (up from an M3). That’s the newest and most powerful generation of Apple chips, so you can expect searing fast performance. Just bear in mind that it’s only the baseline edition, and the faster Pro and Max versions are still exclusive to the MacBook Pro. Performance will also be helped by an expanded range of memory allocations. After an update in October that doubled the entry-level RAM, the M3 Air was available with 16GB or 24GB of RAM, but these new models come with 16GB, 24GB, or a new option of 32GB. If you start off with the baseline configuration of the 13-inch MBA, bumping up to the full 32GB will cost you an extra $400/£400. There’s also a new camera, and this could make a big difference to remote workers who rely on videoconferencing to stay in touch. Whereas the M3 MacBook Air had a simple 1080p FaceTime camera, the new models have a 12MP Center Stage camera that supports Desk View. This might save you from having to buy a separate webcam (although Continuity Camera is another useful option). Apple The last serious improvement for professional users is that the new models support two external displays in addition to the built-in screen. MacBook Airs from just two generations back could only run a single external display, while the M3 generation bumped this up to two, but only when the lid was closed for a total of two. This latest M4 generation lets you spread out across three screens. The battery on the 13-inch model is slightly larger than that of its M3 equivalent (53.8Wh, up from 52.6Wh) but this doesn’t seem to make much difference as Apple’s battery life estimates remain the same. The 15-inch models have identical battery sizes. A more significant difference, while cosmetic, is the arrival of a new Sky Blue color, which replaces Space Gray. The other options are Silver, Starlight, and Midnight. And last, and maybe most pleasing of all, the Air has had a price cut. It now starts at $999/£999, a drop of $100/£100 on the previous generation. Preorders start today and units will ship out and appear in shops on March 12.03:20 pmApple introduces the new M4 MacBook Air at lower starting price of $999

Macworld Apple on Wednesday unveiled a major update to the Mac Studio, the first for the workstation desktop Mac in nearly two years. While the Mac Studio still features M-series Max and Ultra chips, Apple this time decided to go with what appears to be a generational split between the two processors. The Mac Studio starts at $1,999 with an M4 Max chip that has a 14-core CPU (10 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores), a 32-core GPU, 36GB of unified memory (410GBps memory bandwidth), a 16-core Neural Engine, and a 512GB SSD. Customization options are available that boost the M4 Max to a 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, up to 128GB of RAM, and up to an 8TB SSD. Those are the same specs Apple offers with the high-end MacBook Pro models The higher-end Mac Studio standard configuration includes an M3 Ultra chip with a 28-core CPU (10 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores), 60-core GPU, 96GB of unified memory (819GBps memory bandwidth), a 32-core Neural Engine, and a 1TB SSD. Priced at $3,999, the M3 Ultra has options for a 32-core CPU, 80-core GPU, 512GB of RAM, and a 16TB SSD. That’s essentially two M3 Maxes fused together using Apple’s UltraFusion packaging architecture. Of note between the two M-series chips is what appears to be generational mixing. Instead of an M4 Ultra, Apple decided to go with an M3 Ultra. Apple has not commented on why it did not go with an M4 Ultra chip, but describes the M3 Ultra as “the highest-performing chip it has ever created, offering the most powerful CPU and GPU in a Mac, double the Neural Engine cores, and the most unified memory ever in a personal computer.” It’s possible Apple is saving the M4 Ultra for the Mac Pro, which is rumored to get an update this year, but the M4 Ultra specifically has not been a topic of the rumor mill. Last November, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman briefly mentioned that the Mac Pro could get a chip with a 32-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, but those specs match both the Studio’s maxed-out M3 Ultra chip and a potential M4 Ultra. Apple did not change the port configuration for the new Mac Studio, but the Thunderbolt ports have been upgraded to Thunderbolt 5, which offers up to 120Gbps throughput.Apple What does it mean for performance? Apple doesn’t provide a comparison between the M4 Max and the M3 Ultra, instead citing the boost from previous generations (the M3 Ultra versus the M2 Ultra and M1 Ultra, for example). But we can get an idea of what to expect from past benchmarks. Based on Macworld’s testing, the M4 Max is Apple’s fastest chip. But the results show that the M2 Ultra is about 10 percent faster than the M3 Max, while the M1 Ultra offers a 17 percent boost over the M2 Max. So the M3 Ultra will surely take the crown as the fastest chip–but not by a whole lot. The Mac Studio is available for preorder now, with shipments starting on March 12. The new M4 MacBook Air fixes what's been a key problem with the line, and now supports up to two external monitors — and do so without the limitations of the previous M3 edition.Using two external displays plus the MacBook Air's own screenThe newly launched MacBook Air brings with it a significant improvement for users of multiple monitors. While the previous M3 model featured support for two monitors, it was only possible to use both when the MacBook Air's lid was closed. So while users gained the wider screen real estate of two external monitors, they lost the use of their MacBook Air internal display. Now the M4 MacBook Air supports two monitors of up to 6K resolution each, plus the built in 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch screen.
