True, it would have been less of a snappy line if he'd also wedged in the words, "on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday."But he could have just said that there were to be exciting Mac announcements "next week." Instead, the suggestion was a week of announcements, and the reality was three. Macworld Updated October 30, 2024: Apple has released its first Macs to support Thunderbolt 5. This article has been updated to reflect this developmet. In September of 2023, Intel announced Thunderbolt 5, a new update to the Thunderbolt specification that doubles the bi-directional bandwidth to 80 Gbps (Thunderbolt 4 supports up to 40 Gbps). A feature called “Bandwidth Boost” provides up to 120 Gbps for video content. About a year later, the Thunderbolt 5 has made its Mac debut in the new Mac mini and MacBook Pro models that include the M4 Pro processor. Macs that have the regular M4 processor still support Thunderbolt 4. The standard is built on USB4 V2, DisplayPort 2.1, and PCI Express Gen 4 and is fully compatible with previous Thunderbolt versions. The increased performance is achieved using a new signaling technology called “PAM-3” which should enable today’s printed circuit boards and passive cables (up to 1 meter) to achieve this performance. Intel’s comparison image shows the use cases supported by Thunderbolt 5 compared to Thunderbolt 4.Intel Compared to Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5 offers three main benefits. First, it guarantees double the bandwidth (80 Gbps) and can support up to 120 Gbps in a boost mode. Second, it supports a greater number of higher-resolution displays with higher refresh rates. And third, it mandates support for higher power delivery—at least 140W (TB4 required 100W power delivery) with support for up to 240W (TB4 could support a max of 140W). Apple includes Thunderbolt 4 connectors on many Mac computers and the iPad Pro. The M4 Mac mini (with M4 Pro processor) and M4 MacBook Pro (with M4 Pro processor) are the first Macs to support Thunderbolt 5. Windows laptops with Thunderbolt 5 started shipping just a few months earlier, in the summer of 2024. Apple sells a 1-meter Thunderbolt 5 cable for $69/£69.04:44 pmApple Makes 16GB RAM Standard on MacBook Air
Apple has boosted the default RAM to 16GB across its MacBook Air lineup while maintaining existing prices. The memory upgrade affects both M2 and M3 models, with base prices staying at $999 for M2, $1,099 for 13-inch M3, and $1,299 for 15-inch M3 versions. Macworld These days you can’t move without getting hit over the head with a Mac product announcement. We got a new M4 iMac on Monday, a new Mac mini on Tuesday, and a new MacBook Pro today. Apple wasn’t kidding when it referred to this as an ‘exciting week’. The problem with densely carpeted info-bombs is that it’s easy to miss important tidbits. Hidden at the bottom of the MacBook Pro press release, for example, Apple slipped in the welcome news that the MacBook Air is getting a pretty big upgrade of its own. And we’d be surprised if most people even noticed. It might not be the most thrilling of announcements—there’s no new model; the Air will have to wait until next year to get access to the new M4 chipsets and upgraded camera—so we understand why Apple didn’t feel the news was worthy of its own press release. But the average laptop buyer will be pleased to hear that the M2 and M3 MacBook Air models now start at a baseline of 16GB of RAM rather than 8GB, yet the entry-level prices remain the same, starting at $999/£999. In our guide to optimal Mac specs, we explain that 8GB of unified memory is enough “if you’re doing general productivity work, internet access media streaming, and easy media production.” But even then, your Mac may have to use the SSD as virtual memory, which impacts performance. “Even for people who don’t do processor-intensive work,” we explain, “[16GB] is a better fit.” And as anyone can attest, more for the same price is always better. So it’s good news to hear that you can get 16GB without having to pay extra.
