I guess I’m far from alone in having non-techy friends ask my advice on which Apple device to buy. I always start by asking what’s important to them, and what they want to do with it. For Macs, my advice changed significantly after the launch of the M1 MacBook Air. Prior to that, my answer to the question “which Mac should I buy for basic tasks like email, web, and writing” was quite often “buy an iPad and keyboard instead” … more…01:59 pmHere’s an inside look at the iPhone 16e’s C1 modem and how it works with the A18 chip
The iPhone 16e is a unique phone for many reasons. The most notable feature, however, is that it includes Apple’s first-ever cellular modem, the C1. In an interview with Reuters this week, Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, teased that the C1 is “just the start” of Apple’s work in this industry. Meanwhile, Andru Edwards also had the opportunity to tour Apple’s modem testing labs for a behind-the-scenes look at what went into the development of the new C1 modem. more…01:55 pmMore baseball for Apple as MLB, ESPN opt out of TV deal?

The first Geekbench listing for what appears to be the iPhone 16e details the difference between it and the iPhone 16, plus confirms the expected amount of RAM.The new iPhone 16eApple would rather talk about what you can do with a device than mention specifications such as the amount of RAM in it. Consequently RAM wasn't mentioned in the launch of the iPhone 16e, but it was presumed that the new iPhone comes with 8GB RAM.That's because at least 8GB RAM is required for Apple Intelligence. There was never any question that the iPhone 16e would include Apple Intelligence, but now the first benchmarks confirm it has 8GB RAM. There's been a lot of fear in the last few days that Apple left off MagSafe off the iPhone 16e because it somehow interfered with Apple's C1 cellular modem, but physics precluded that from the start. Here's how.Charging with MagSafeObviously, the iPhone 16e lacks MagSafe. There's been a lot said about it, and it's a problem for the device.Almost immediately, we heard whispers from case manufacturers that it may not have been cost-cutting, but instead was interfering with the C1 cellular radio. Macworld The shocks just keep on coming. After unveiling the iPhone 16e earlier this week, Apple has now revealed that the iPhone 15 Pro is going to get Visual Intelligence despite not having the Camera Control button normally used to activate it. The clues to this surprise, in fact, were there to be spotted at the 16e launch as that phone is in exactly the same boat. It too does not have a Camera Control button (one of many compromises to keep down the price) yet it will support Visual Intelligence out of the box. If the iPhone 16e can offer this feature, it stands to reason that any handset with the specs to run Apple Intelligence can do likewise. The iPhone 15 Pro obviously did not support Visual Intelligence out of the box, since the feature did not exist at that time. But as reported by John Gruber of Daring Fireball, Visual Intelligence will come to the iPhone 15 Pro “in a future software update.” That’s almost certain to be iOS 18.4, which is slated for an early April release but hasn’t begun beta testing yet. Visual Intelligence is one of the marquee features of Apple Intelligence. It’s used to deduce information from visual images: you can point your camera at a pair of headphones, for instance, and Visual Intelligence will do its best to tell you what they are and where you can buy them. It can identify plants and animals, summarize text, create Calendar events from flyers, and get information about businesses from a glance at their frontage. You activate it by pressing and holding the Camera Control… at least, that’s how you activate it for now. We don’t yet know how it will work on the iPhones 16e and 15 Pro. The iPhone 16e lacks support for MagSafe charging, an omission that has dominated conversations about Apple’s cheapest iPhone model this week. Initially, there was speculation that MagSafe might have been excluded due to interference with Apple’s C1 chip, which is its first-ever cellular modem designed for the iPhone.
