The service, previously available by invitation only, will be open to all starting today. “Although it will no longer require invitations to sign up, Gmail is retaining its ‘beta,’ or test, status, signaling that Google still considers the service to be a work in progress,” notes the report.

Google increases email storage space to 2GB

Today marks the first anniversary of Google’s Gmail email service, and the company has doubled the storage space to 2GB, up from its present 1GB offering, reports AP. The change takes effect today and Google says this increase will not be the last. The company said it will continue to increase storage space based on its user’s needs. “Our goal is to make sure storage is no longer an issue for Web mail users,” said Marissa Mayer, Google’s director of consumer Web products.

Google to offer free e-mail with 1GB of storage

According to a press release sent out late Wednesday, Google will soon begin testing a preview version of “Gmail,” a free search-based e-mail service with a storage capacity of 1 gigabyte (the equivalent of 500,000 pages of e-mail) per user. “Unlike other free webmail services, Gmail is built on the idea that users should never have to file or delete a message, or struggle to find an e-mail they’ve sent or received,” Google said.
