Strong sales of Apple’s iPod mini have fueled a 22 percent increase in the company’s stock in the past two weeks. Bloomberg notes that Apple’s stock had increased in 10 of the past 12 trading days before yesterday and as of Wednesday was the best performer in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index this month. The article also points out that Apple’ flagship store in San Francisco has twice run out of the iPod mini since opening 12 days ago.

The iPod mini is virtually sold out after less than two weeks in stores, with nearly 100,000 of the colorful digital music players being bought up. USA Today notes that a number of brick-and-mortor stores and online stores have completely sold out of their stock. The Apple Store even tells shoppers to expect a one to three week wait. “We’re asking people to be patient with us,” says Greg Joswiak, Apple marketing vice president.

Danika Cleary, Apple’s iPod worldwide product marketing manager, talked about the pricing and size of the iPod mini in a Macworld UK interview. “We really do think the price is right, and that’s because of a couple of reasons. The first is: when you really look at the flash-based players on the market, for around $200 you can get one—but for just $50 more you can get 16 times the amount of music in a package that’s not much bigger than any of the top-selling players in that category,” Cleary said.
