In a column posted today on O’Reilly’s Web site, Francois Joseph de Kermadec offers his thoughts on Apple’s iTunes software and wonders where it is headed.”Sitting in every Mac user’s Dock is iTunes, the application that took Apple to another level, supported the iPod, the first iApp to be ported to Windows. iTunes, while less popular than the Music Store it gives access to or the iPod it connects to, remains the central piece of Apple’s music and video puzzle.

Apple today released iTunes 5.0.1 via Mac OS X’s Software Update utility, the latest version of its popular digital music jukebox and online music store. Apple today kicked off its countdown to half a billion songs sold on the iTunes Music Store with an online song counter “so music fans around the world can participate in the race to purchase and download the 500 millionth song.” As part of the countdown, Apple is giving away an iPod mini and an iTunes gift card for 50 songs to the iTunes customer who purchases the winning song at each 100,000 interval.

Apple has quietly released iTunes 4.8. The company has said very little about this new version, apart from: “Tunes 4.8 includes new Music Store features and support for transferring contacts and calendars from your computer to your iPod (requires Mac OS X version 10.4 on your computer).” The software is available for download from Apple’s Web site.

Apple has closed a security hole that allowed a program to connect to the iTunes Music Store and buy songs stripped of antipiracy protections, reports CNET News.com. “The PyMusique software, created by a trio of independent programmers online, emerged last week as a copy protection-free back door into the popular iTunes store. One of the creators was Jon Johansen, the Norwegian programmer responsible for releasing DVD-copying software in 1999.

As expected, Apple has begun blocking users of iTunes 4.2 or lower from making purchases from the iTunes Music Store. The company is encouraging users to upgrade to more recent versions of iTunes. “As of today, customers will need to use one of the three most recent versions of iTunes — 4.7, 4.6 or 4.5 — to continue purchasing and downloading songs,” Apple said in a statement provided to MacMinute.

Apple’s iTunes Music Store continues to dominate the digital music market, according to new data released today by The NPD Group. Echoing the same number Apple touts publicly, the research firm said nearly 70 percent of music files downloaded legally between December 2003 and July 2004 were downloaded from iTunes. Napster’s share for the same period was 11 percent, while MusicMatch, RealNetworks and Wal-Mart each reached a six percent share.

According to Apple, they are designed to help “maximize sales” on the iTunes Music Store. Most of the tools — such as the iTunes Link Maker, Tell-a-Friend e-mails and iTunes RSS feeds — are public knowledge. However, Apple also explains a few programs for the first time.

Apple’s iTunes Music Store, which opened its doors in April of 2003, has just sold its 100 millionth song. To mark the milestone, Apple earlier this month launched a countdown promotion in which it said it would give away a 17-inch PowerBook, a 40GB iPod, and a gift certificate for 10,000 iTunes songs to the lucky person who downloaded the 100 millionth song. Apple will also give away iPods to those who downloaded each 100,000th song between 95 million and 100 million.
