PalmOne said late yesterday that CEO Todd Bradley is stepping down next month. “President Ed Colligan, 43, was named interim CEO and a candidate for the permanent position, said the Milpitas handheld-device maker. Colligan is a co-founder of the original Palm, who left to start Handspring and returned when Palm acquired Handspring last year.

PalmOne today announced the Tungsten T5 handheld. The US$399 device offers 256MB of flash memory, a high-resolution 320×480 color screen, Bluetooth wireless technology, an Intel 416MHz XScale processor, and all-new “sleek and slim” design. The Tungsten T5 will be widely available on Nov. 3. In related news, PalmOne has announced a $50 price cut on the Tungsten T3 handheld (now $349).

palmOne today announced an add-on Wi-Fi card for Tungsten T3 and Zire 72 handheld users. The first such product from the company will add 802.11b connectivity to the devices, allowing users to set up and quickly connect to the Internet anytime they are within range of a Wi-Fi access point or hotspot. The US$129 Wi-Fi card is scheduled to be available from palmOne’s online store and in retail stores worldwide in early September.

palmOne today announced a resource center for Mac users who want to get the most out of their palmOne handhelds and smartphones. The new Web pages highlight multimedia applications, wireless technology, and tips & tricks. The Mac resource center, featuring “Web Resources” and “Support Resources” sections on its home page, also offers specific help under the categories “Photo Albums & iPhoto,” “Syncing w/ iSync,” “Go Wireless” and “Software.” Read More

As expected, PalmOne today announced two new color Zire handhelds. The Zire 72 (US$299) features a built-in 1.2-megapixel camera; a 312MHz Intel PXA270 processor; a 320 x 320 color screen; the ability to capture photos and video clips; an MP3 player; the ability to create and edit Word and Excel-compatible files; built-in Bluetooth; 32MB of memory; and an expansion slot.

Palm today revealed that “palmOne” will be the new name it will adopt following the proposed spin-off this fall of PalmSource, makers of the Palm OS platform software. “The name ‘palmOne’ will reflect the company’s handheld computer hardware and software solutions business and encompass the subbrands Zire and Tungsten, as well as Treo, upon the completion of the planned acquisition of Handspring, also expected this fall.” Products will begin to bear the new brand name in 2004.
