eWeek: 64-bit Macs may outpace ‘Panther’

eWeek reports that Apple is nearing the release of new Power Macs featuring IBM’s 64-bit PowerPC 970 chip — but a 64-bit version of Mac OS X (expected to be the upcoming Mac OS X “Panther”) may lag behind by a month or two. “Sources said that the IBM chip will make its first appearance in a new Power Mac known internally as Q37. However, sources said, Q37 won’t ship with a 64-bit version of Mac OS X, limiting OS performance gains in the initial release.

eWeek: Mac OS X ‘Panther’ expected in September

The next major revision to Mac OS X, dubbed “Panther,” will reach end users in mid-September, according to eWeek. “According to sources familiar with the forthcoming revisions to the Unix-based OS, Apple will freeze development on new features in May and finalize enhancements to the user interface in July,” writes Matthew Rothenberg.
