Apple has launched a new promotion that offers US$300 back via mail-in rebate with the purchase of a Power Mac G5 or PowerBook G4 and the full version of QuarkXPress 6. Alternatively, Apple offers $100 back with the purchase of a Power Mac G5 or PowerBook G4 and a qualifying QuarkXPress 6 upgrade. The “One publishing powerhouse” promotion is valid through January 10, 2005.

Quark today announced the release of Quark Publishing System 3 Classic Edition (QPS Classic 3), a new version of its software for professional publishing and editorial workflows. QPS Classic 3 provides full support for QuarkXPress 6 and Mac OS X, along with other performance enhancements. Used by more than 50,000 people at publishing sites worldwide, QPS Classic is one of the leading publishing systems in the industry.

The image editor will be included as part of the upcoming QuarkXPress 6.2 and is one example of a new focus and “a lot of exciting stuff going on at Quark,” Director of Communications Glen Turpin told MacMinute.

Quark today announced the release of QuarkXClusive, a new XTensions module for QuarkXPress 6 that offers powerful variable data publishing capabilities. The free module, which is currently only available for Mac OS X, lets businesses output customized, database-driven documents on HP Indigo digital presses.

Quark has posted an update to QuarkXPress, the latest release of the company’s powerful design and page layout software. QuarkXPress 6.1 offers support for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, improved integration with Microsoft Excel, a new font mapping utility that lets users create and manage rules to govern automatic font substitution, and more.

Quark announced Tuesday that Kamar Aulakh has been appointed CEO of the company in addition to his current role as president. “Kamar has a profound vision that will lead Quark into the future, and proven expertise at running a global technology company,” said former Quark CEO Fred Ebrahimi, who will remain chairman of its board of directors. “He has built world-class software development centers in the United States and India, and has demonstrated his development and managerial expertise countless times over the last eight years.

Quark has appointed Kamar Aulakh as the company’s new president. In his new role, Aulakh will improve the interoperability of Quark’s products and services, and will now report directly to Quark’s board of directors. He joined Quark in 1995 and has held a variety of positions, most recently vice president of research and development. Former Quark president Fred Ebrahimi will continue to be the company’s chairman and CEO, and will focus on the long-term growth of the company.

Quark has released Edit Original, a QuarkXTension module for QuarkXPress 6.0 that allows you to open images with a default application to edit. The new module is a replacement for the Open Publisher command provided by the Subscriber Options dialog box found in QuarkXPress 5 and earlier.

Quark has released a demo version of QuarkXpress 6, the company’s powerful design and layout software. Quark began shipping QuarkXPress 6, the first version available for Mac OS X, in June. The demo has a number of limitations and disabled features.

“It’s always been an interesting relationship with the Mac community… sometimes a bit rocky,” said Jürgen Kurz, Quark’s VP of product management at a feature presentation from last week’s Macworld CreativePro Conference & Expo. However, he told the crowd that Quark was there to “celebrate” that QuarkXpress 6 was shipping.

After Quark’s announcement yesterday at the Apple campus, Quark CEO Fred Ebrahimi offered conciliatory remarks to a publishing community that has been stalled in its Mac OS X upgrade plans for years while waiting for QuarkXPress 6, reports CRN. “The truth of the matter is we should have done this earlier,” he said.

At a briefing on the Apple campus today, Quark announced that QuarkXPress 6 for Mac OS X, the latest upgrade to the company’s popular design and layout software, will ship next week. QuarkXPress 6 brings a host of new features and enhancements, all of which we have detailed in previous reports.
