The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) handed out its first awards this week for digtal music sold through online stores such as Apple’s iTunes. OutKast’s “Hey Ya!” took top honors with a multi-platinum award for downloads of at least 400,000, while “The Way You Move” and “Roses” won platinum awards for sales of more than 200,000 each.

Read MoreThe New York Times (free subscription required) notes that Hilary Rosen, chairman and chief executive officer of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), said she believed Apple had “struck an industry-friendly balance” with its reported music service. It “has compatibility with a hardware product that is elegant and easy to use,” said Rosen, who said she planned to attend Apple’s special event later today.
