A Vivendi Universal executive is quoted in a new Bloomberg report saying that Apple may bid US$6 billion for the Universal Music unit.

The New York Times (free registration required) is reporting today that people close to the Apple and Universal Music discussions have cautioned that a deal was unlikely to be concluded. “The talks between Apple and Vivendi covered the concept of buying as much as a third of the music unit, according to people close to the discussions. But the talks appear to have been just exploratory discussions that did not go far.

A story in today’s LA Times (free registration required) reports that Apple is in talks with Vivendi Universal to buy Universal Music Group, the world’s largest record company, for as much as US$6 billion. “Defying conventional wisdom, Jobs apparently is betting that music is finally on the verge of becoming a profitable presence on the Internet.
