Microsoft: iTunes for Windows has too many limitations
On Wednesday, the day before Apple launched iTunes for Windows, Dave Fester, Microsoft’s General Manager of the Windows Digital Media Division, said that the Windows platform will be a challenge for Apple. “Unless Apple decides to make radical changes to their service model, a Windows-based version of iTunes will still remain a closed system, where iPod owners cannot access content from other services,” he said.

Some analysts are saying iTunes for Windows may be joining the Windows side of the digital music industry too late, as there are already similar services for Windows users, such as MusicMatch, BuyMusic.com, and Napster 2.0, reports Reuters. “They’re going to have a serious problem with the Windows community,” said Rob Enderle, principal of market research firm the Enderle Group.

A briefing on Yahoo’s In Play report notes that the Wall Street Journal suggests that in its current incarnation, Apple’s iTunes Music Store “provides minute profits” to the company. It should be noted, however, that when Apple launched the online music service, its share price jumped dramatically.
